Hi All,

Im looking to buy a laptop when im in the UK next month and wondered if anyone knows any good places to try apart from PC World?

The one im looking at currently is the Toshiba Satellite A100-147 for 599quid.

I have bought 2 Toshiba laptops from PC World in the past.

The battery life on them has been atrocious. The latest one was a "Satellite" but I can't remember the model. I bought it last Christmas and the battery will only last half an hour in normal use - using Office etc. It doesn't even last that long if you are watching DVDs!

The previous one was no better. I bought a new battery for it but it still ran out very quickly.

I wouldn't buy another Toshiba.

I bought a Gateway from ToysRus about three months ago. High spec and very long battery life. Just remember to back up all the drivers as it does not supply those discs. :rob

Glad to hear that the Toshibas battery life is getting better. Actually 30mins is pretty good. My 10year old Toshiba lasts 30secs on a good day!

Might wait until after christmas and grab a bargin, people tell me that Windows Vista will be released to laptops early next year so sellers might be discounting after christmas in an effort to get rid of XP loaded machines.....

My Toshiba satellite is a 2003 pro. It's been brilliant. :thumb
But the battery life is crap.
When this one packs up, I'll get another.

OK... Two or 3 years ago our company went with Toshiba laptops (Satellite Pros) for all the mobile peeps (about 50 laptops)
After a 2 years my screen hinges froze up preventing me from closing it. On looking around I saw that the new wave were Dell. In discussions with the head IT guru, he said they were phasing out Toshiba due to high failure rates due to heat.
In my office alone there were 2 failures, mine was the only one "working" after 2 years ??

The latest generaton of Toshiba laptops have much better battery life, and Toshibas are virtually bombproof ime.

You may find something suitable on their auction website as I did a while back

I'll second that - just bought one from PC World and the battery lasts ages, far longer than my 2 year old bitsa.

Looks well made and nice to use too (the Toshiba, not my bitsa!) :thumb

For absolute reliability and 3 hour battery life (after 3.5 years of use and abuse) IBM/Lenovo thinkpads take some beating.

They're not the cheapest but they do last and perform reliably. My work PC, for 10 years now, has been a Thinkpad and they've been so good I bought one for home as the main PC.

I think my work spec 60gb/512 memory/Centrino mobile/DVD burner/ comes in at around £750.
