Friday night is prep night

Hi I'm booked on the Tossers-in-the-Tejeda III - 2nd-9th October 2010 remember my bar opening ( no plan to actually allow clients in ) soon in the Alps "the smiling dog" well I have been fretting about prepping the bike so last night resigned myself to prep. After dinner I had got myself in to the state of mind required for the task , then just as I go to the garage I catch a glimpse of the weather report ummmm sunny :) Looked at bike, looked at Ski, looked at bike really must do bike now, ummm seems a waste of a sunny saturday, but no bike prep weekend awaits, wife always says i lack self control, silently hooked up ski and went to bed ready for best drive of the week 7:00am to Hayling on a sunny Saturday before England wakes up.

Jetski's at sea is fun, Enduro really or trail riding but without Ramblers ( thankfully they sink) and no one to say "my land" my lane" etc. The Harbour Master is a top man and very positive, as long as you don't hang round the mouth of the harbour annoying other users.

I do a quick lap of the Isle of Wight, 70 miles, ski top speed 70mph if the sea is flat, generally it never is or never for a hole lap its a bit like Forest Gump would say just replace sea for rain , i've seen all sorts of seas, flat sea , swell sea / choppy sea / wakey sea / lumpy sea, upside down sea got the idea you always get a bit of each on your way round the island.

70 miles / 70mph = 1 hour for the lap right, but today it took me three hours with just quick stops for a Mars Bar then a splash of fuel at Yarmouth, so ride as fast I can 40/ 50 /60mph for 70 miles and what do I average 23.3 mph sounds lame but its my fastest lap yet.

Ski's makes you smile here is a picky at St Catherines Point

Anyway 8 days to the bikes are shipped plenty of time to prep, will learn to apply myself. Promise

Bike prep

Tyres and moooses fitted (feck they were hard)

realised when fitting wheels that pads were worn, ordered pads from ebay. came to fit them on friday. rear feckers were wrong ones, so a quick trip to the local motocross shop in woodford sorted that out, bastard shop owner sold be a hd go pro along with a £15.00 set of rear pads.

discovered a fuel leak and now turns out the tank to fuel pump gasket is fecked. Ordered one from SBW not available til Tuesday, but cant pick up til Saturday.

It will mean a complete disassembly of the entire rear end of the bike, rear subframe, shock the lot. If the spare doesnt turn up im fecked, contingency plan is to take the 950 SE

Im going to order a second gasket from park lane on monday just in case.

Took all the plastics off ripped off graphics, job for today fit new go faster shiny graphics.

Changed the oil on the KTM, fitted my new HDB handguards, changed the coolant for Engine Ice, also front brake pads, (rears have lots in them), and made sure I did everything from the bike toolkit so I can do oil changes and stuff out there. Got a spare plug, oil filter, rear pads, levers (even though mine are allegedly unbreakable:augie).

Possu has made up a very nice rear subframe support on Jm's Scorpa so she can fit a toolkit on the back, plus we fitted decent handguards and Cycra - type handguard mounts as she wrecked the Acerbis ones the other week.

Just about to start packing up now.

I'm glad someone's resonably sorted!

I might have to look for another bike this week .....!

im waiting to see if my gasket comes in it appears to be out of stock.

(I might have to ship the bike then fit it out there)

Can anyone reccomend a good liquid gasket that is petrol proof ?

My final prep suffered a major setback today - but it's nothing that a new wiring loom won't fix. Maybe the fault that frazzled the wiring was also responsible for the low-fuel light not working.

Anyway, it's now at the menders and I'm cashing in on Husaberg's generous 30-day warranty!

:blast

Greg

News from the menders:

  • The wiring loom had chaffed through to the frame under the tank
  • Husaberg will take it as a warranty claim
  • No stock of wiring looms in the UK
  • New loom being flown in from Austria - will be at dealers by Thursday
  • Should be ready by Saturday

Prep budget released

Great news this morning, wifey has deposited money with KTM centre at Hemel Hempstead for parts required for pre Tejeda prep of bike. I did ask wife why possibly i could not have the money myself to take to retail emporium? she expleted something about me being a fecking nightmare. It's all arranged now with the dealer any more back chat and budget will be cancelled altogether. With great excitement I left work early to get to Hemel before closing time. At the sales desk I announced my arrival and clarified that undisclosed substantial sums had been deposited today with their bankers and I was here to obtain merchandise befitting of a ukgser event participant.

I have to say the manner of the sales assistant seemed cold, perhaps even condescending, anyway I was not going to let him deplete my pent up excitement. As i browsed the gadgetry the sales assistant announced " you've got three minutes, what do you want" ummm then it came to me wifey has surpassed herself, I asked " has she arranged a KTM version of supermarket sweep for me" (where I grab goods as the clock counts down from 180 to zero) "no mate she transferred £20.00 to our account for you to spend, and in KTM speak that equals 3 minutes of my time so what do you want" well my heart sank, again.
Now feeling slightly foolish I battled to hide my disappointment and enquired what I could purchase for the sum aforementioned. His reply was "you now have two minutes" to be honest I thought this was generous, with my face turning red it felt like I had been in his presence an hour.

Anyway thinking on my feet I went for low ticket items, 2 inner tubes and a piece of foam that fits like a sock around the piece of foam in the air filter housing, looking at the goods on the counter which to my eye I would value at £11.00 I thought i'd go for it and requested a set of tyre levers. He took down a pack of 3 bent peices of mild steel that glowed orange and announced with a derisory laugh that "the tyre levers were £27:00 pound on their own", I suggested were he able to supply tyre levers that were not orange and did not have KTM branding, his clipped response was that the shop was not called "THE KTM CENTRE" for nothing. At this point I felt little was to be gained from extending the transaction. I requested a bag for my goods (orange of course) to which he told me feck off and don't bother coming again.

Back home I remonstrated with my wife that perhaps she did not understand the ethos of a ukgser event, that this community of people are intent on rescuing the UK economy from it current perilous state. I gave examples to enhance my case of new bikes purchased then 30% of the parts are removed to be replaced with alternative new parts, I pleaded that without new purchases what chance did I have of bonding with the group. I detailed how rather than let me ride with the pack, they would insist I follow at a respectable distance perhaps 1Km.

I'm sad to say it cut no ice she advised me, as usual "to fecking apply myself then you can buy what u want" :(

They do a great cup of coffee - orange mug of course! I believe that it's twenty quid a cup for inner-tube only customers!

:D

BTW - where shall we start the drinks kitty? €50 each? That should keep us going until Monday.

Essentials?

Hi Ya

While packing a thought came to me is it worthwhile allocating an item to each particpant to carry in their back pack each day, I think we should all carry our own tubes , drinks, snacks, basic tools etc.

But it may save the day for someone if we are all allocated a essential item to carry each day on the ride that may be useful , but there is probably little benefit in all ten of us carrying the same item.

Perhaps Greg can advise what has been useful in past trips.

items that come to mind to me are

2 meter hose for redistributing fuel
Tie wraps
First aid kit
Tow rope
Pump

Can Greg draw up a list and allocate ?

It's not a bad idea.

Whilst I think that most people can manage a few cable ties, there seems to be little point in everyone carrying three tyre-irons each.

However, we will need to check each days as we may split into a couple of groups as the week unfolds.
