This has also been posted on the BMW owners club site. Apologies to anyoone who finds it on both!

My 2004 1200GS has suffered a total electrical failure. The battery is charged up, but there doesn't seem to be any power reaching the ignition switch (When the key is turned I get no light or other sign on the display and no sound of the pump or brakes priming).

Has anyone else had a similar problem, or know what voltage I should get from the wires plugged into the switch (There doesn't appear to be any voltage difference between the earth and any of the wires), or any information on what switches or relays etc may be between the live battery lead and the ignition switch?

Any help very much appreciated.

Regards,
Keith.

All connections tight? If so probably the Ign Switch, it's not uncommon unfortunately.

i had something similar, the battery showed 12v, but feck all else. The LCD screen wouldnt come on etc - totally dead as was the battery which died overnight.

try a new or known battery

Relay under the seat, I think you should hear it click when you turn the ignition on, if there's no click then it's most likely the starter relay.

Also check the kill switch in the correct position, side stand is up and bike is in neutral.

Try jump starting from another battery.
If it works your batterys obviously shagged.
Had the same only a week ago.

Thanks All..........................

Thanks All, I did a bit of digging this afternoon and found that by jumping a lead straight from the battery to the red wire into the ignition everything worked perfectly.

A bit more unravelling of tape and I found the wire had broken just where it passes through the frame.

Spliced in a new bit of wire and everything is perfect again.

Hope this helps someone in the future.

Keith.
