.... Riding home through rural Monmouthshire late last night and I lost all lights on my 2002 R1150GS ... a tad un-nerving on an unlit A road :eek:

Headlights and foglights
Indicators (incl hazards)
Instrument lights

.... EXCEPT the left hand instrument light (engine temp/gear selector/fuel level) and the brake light when either lever is operated.

I limped to Abergavenny bus station and had to be recovered to Cardiff from there:blast:blast

Obviously I checked the fuses but all appear intact.

Anything spring to mind ...?

Change your load relief relay (small yellow on front row left ) with one of the small black ones to see if that cures your problem.

Does the bike Start, if not check the small black wire that runs to the starter motor, if that has fallen off, or broken, then your load relief relay will not work.

Nice one Ian I was mulling this over thinking about Light circuit and thinking Hmm no it's more than light circuit ... blah blah blah

And also What was that blokes name who is very good on these electrics :-D

I think you are right on the money there! Its the one that feed those circuits

I think Load shedding relay is second from Left on an 1150 ??

Sorry, you're correct. The first one is the big yellow start relay, but as there is nothing to swop that with, I guess the OP wouldn't have a problem working out which is the small yellow one.

Not sure if the above have worked (assuming you've had time to try). But how did you check the fuses? Did you try swapping any?

Sometimes those buggers look OK but they're not.

Thanks for the replies. I did have a look at the relays but as my technical ability is limited to changing fuses I left them there.

The bike is due a service anyway so I've taken it to my mechanic and left it with him ... he suspects that it is the wire off the starter motor issue highlighted above.

Will report back.

EPILOGUE .... it was the relay, although it was black in colour in my fusebook and has apparently been superceded by a yellow one which is beefed-up compared to the original spec. My mechanic did explain what had happened but it all got a bit technical. Apparently this relay defaults back to the ignition circuit once the lights are on ... or something :nenau

Anyway on this occassion the relay burnt itself out hence the rather inconvenient failure.

Thanks for the advice and feedback as ever.
