Whilst excelarating in third gear up a steep incline I lost power, a quick look at the display and it was totally dead, nothing!!!!! Just as if I had removed the key.
I stopped, reset the egnition a couple of times and off we went again without another hitch. All the usual things were checked, ie: loose leads, full lock both ways for broken wires but no sign of anything.......
This was on a quiet Tuscan road and if it was the day before on the motorway round Naples I would have been wiped out by some mad Italian.
The bike is still in Italy, I go back to finish my trip next week, any suggestions for what I should look for before continuing???????

Try checking the ingnition wires haven't moved off the rear of the ignition switch. Also look at your kill switch.

Good luck:aidan

Battery connections clean and tight.

Or battery isn't goosed.

BTW IIRC the kill switch doesn't switch off the RID if the ignition is on.

Doubt it would be the kill switch because the whole panel switched off.

Ignition wires seemed solid enough.

And I am going for another go:oonyack

Coincidentally about the same happened to me just few days ago on my return from Scotland. However the second time the bike did not start any more, no matter what I tried. Turned out to be a bad battery which was replaced under warranty by a dealer near Amiens (France). No more problems since.

On a side note, big kudos to BMW assistance for their help. Just one call from me, and they arranged for a towing car, and the dealer was already informed when we arrived couple hours later. Also the whole issue did cost me only the phone call and about 5 hours of time, the rest was free (ok, now I know where all that money goes that we pay for these bikes ...) :thumb

I had a complete shut down on the RT and it was diagnosed as the kill switch. Never had a problem after that.

Take it to a dealer and let him read the fault codes that will be stored.:)

Or buy a GS 911 diagnostic tool and read them yourself when you get to Italy. :D

Better than guesswork and one of the advantages of the later BMWs.

An 1150?

Its the 1200, freshly serviced before the trip and battery fully charged the night before starting the trip showed strong.

As Im going back out again in about ten days to head up into the Dolomites then Alps I might try and find a dealer enroute and get it looked at.:oonyack
