Okay, can someone please help me out here,

am looking at one of the arai tour X helmets, now tried a garish silver pattterned one today in HG Hull, was a tad too small, but the writing on the back said ' Tour Cross'

so i has me a look on here and various shops online, lots of shops doing lots of deals, visorshop, gearchange to metion some names, they all advertise the tour x 2, whats the difference between the X and the X2, gearchange are throwing the motard black at 239, biut quoting it as a tour x2, a post on here said the motard is last years model,

somebody please help meeee!

Motard is last years limited edition, Tour-X is up to last year, Tour-X 2 is this year. All refer to the paint scheme, little else is really different (one vent extra on the Motard, IIRC).

Wizard is bang on. You will get deals on older helmets (the manufacture date is on a white label on the chin strap tucked under the leather casing on an Arai).

Deals are good because you get a cheaper helmet. Older helmets are bad because a helmet allegedly has a lifespan (supposedly 7 years on Arais) and so if it is a year old you have lost a year of wear. Also you will have last year's colours / vents etc. (if this matters to you).

In reality the thing that will determine a helmet's life is how much you use it and how carefull you are with it :thumb

You`re not quite right there,Mutters, old chap.

Helmets are given a life span from date of purchase....Arai certainly.

i don't know about that for sure... but if your racing you get 3 years from the date stamp in the helmet

but all this is like droping your helmet (a small drop will do little or no damage to a helmet) it is a bit of a scare you into buying a new one type thing

BUT Arai dealers are supposed to only sell helmets less than two years old, thereby giving a total lifespan of up to 7 years.

And that tallies exactly with what the Arai technician said at a presentation...

That Arai helmets are given a service life of five years from time of purchase.

This is one of those "let's all agree but be awkward about it" moments, isn't it :D

So I think you'll find that what I said was correct then :nenau

If the maximum age of an Arai at purchase is 2 years and you are only supposed to wear them for 5 years from purchase then 7 years from the date on the chin strap would be the maximum age of a Tour-X :thumb

I think you are being a little pedantic ;)

Your lid is only supposed to been worn 5 years from it's inception date (on the chin strap) The internal material within the shell degrades over time and it's protective effect for your Barnett in the event of a spill will be impaired (according to Arai) :bounce1

So, always check when your lid was born before you buy!

I can't see it being 5 years from when it's bought from the shop, otherwise, why put an inception date on the lid itself in the first place :nenau

An X-2 has a bigger neck roll section which should make it quieter. It also has some small changes to the structure round the bottom of the helmet and a bit more of a rubber spoiler on the bottom of the chin section. PB

Yes, my understanding is that is it five years from the date on the strap. However, I believe this period is derived from the effects of UV light which breaks down - I assume - the shell over time. Therefore, if you lid has spent a year in a dark cupboard it probably wouldn't hurt.

Still, that doesn't help the five year old Doohan replica that is sitting on my desk as I type....

Paul.
