tour x

You might want to have a look at the Shoei Hornet which is due out in the UK any time now.

Similar style to the Arai Tour X.

The Shoei UK web site has all the details (sorry haven't got the link to hand).

Regards Bob

There's one on E-Bay , $400 from the states , looks the business

Why dont you look at the BMW ENDURO helmet ive used one for 12 months now, found it very comfy and quiet and never had any leaks with vizor closed.

Actually I am not really impressed. For me only one good point... the huge area of vision. .. Bad points.... need to take peak off if planning going over 50mph.
I have one and the vision is superb. I've heard a lot about people having problems with buffeting and the peak but I can't say that I've experienced any problems myself (inc at 111mph according to the GPS). :augie

I do have Tobinators on the bike though, so don't know whether I'd have a problem without them. :nenau

I couldn't be bothered to adjust the screen on the last GSA I borrowed from Vines, so the buffeting from the screen was fairly heavy. Despite that the peak merely shuddered slightly - on my own bike with a properly adjusted screen there's not really any movement at all.

Get the BMW Enduro. Its a MUCH better helmet. I had the Arai for 3-4 week before I tried the BMW, and now the Arai just collects dust. Two biggest anoyances with the Arai: 1) Visor has no 'clicks' to hold it in a Open/Closed/half open position. With the visor on full open it will gradually close itself as the speed increases. If the visor is closed it will open slightly when you get above 80 km/h. 2) The beak is flimsy and will bend/move around in the wind and with general handling. FIt wise it is only OK, but then I have never had an Arai shaped head...

Sounds to me that your visor isnt fitted correctly or you have broke something, mine does none of what you mention.

Ditto...could possibly be that the screws aren't tight enough? Equally, if you don't have an Arai-shaped head, perhaps this was not the lid for you?

The peak needs to be a bit bendy for survival and longevity; too stiff and it would shear in the most gentle of offs, which would be a pain and get rather expensive after a while.

thread to bed

Shoei Hornet

Re the Shoei Hornet I spoke to my local Dealer today ('cause he gives me a good deal :D ). Apparently this helmet is being launched to Dealers next week on the 15th. Hoping to have a chat with him next weekend to check on availability, colours etc.

Regards,
Bob

just to add to this thread, I got my MRA vario screen yesterday and now I get no buffeting with the tour-x, even at silly speeds it was sooo smoooth :thumb

Just thought I should post an update.

Got a Tour X and went out for 3 hours yesterday on my standard GS1200. I'm 5' 10 on standard seat height, and the buffeting comes in at 50mph and sounds like a low frequency drumming and doesn't change much with higher speeds. It lets above average air through with vents closed and the visor mists up below 50mph at 12 C ambient temperature.

I will use it for Summer mostly as the peak is good for sunshading the eyes, and it is good up to 50mph with the visor up or half down, which keep the flys out. Sunglasses fit easily. Comfy fit and a nice strap clasp arrangement and probably it's best feature is the Offroad image on the GS.

For practicality, I like my Shoei Mutitec best. Versatile, Noise levels much better than the Tour X with the flip front and superb Shoei anti-mist system.

My Raid 2 is quieter again and good value. Just no flip front and used mostly in Winter. Beats the XR1000 because the fit and function are identical but the Vent controls are superior.

I am probably a Shoei biased head. I use a L Shoei, but an XL Arai. When measured, the Arai dealer said I was between L and XL, and an Arai L was a no go.

Is Tour cross and tour X identical ? They look identical.
Anyway mine in a Tour cross, used it for 3000kl in Spain at xmas.
Lots of rain and very high winds especially following the coast down to tariffa.
I had no problem with the peak, even flat out on the 1200GS.
Helmet feels slightly loose compared to mt Shoei XR1000
I may need a half size ajustment, I understand this can be done by a Arai agent.
Very comfy, it is drafty. Visor cannot be removed without taking the thing apart. I found it quiet due to the inner pads up against my ears.
Still a great helmet.

Shoei Hornet

Got myself a Shoei Hornet at the weekend and did 80+ miles with it. Must say I'm very impressed. Previously I've been using a Shoei XR1000.

Not too drafty as it comes supplied with a nifty chin-curtain as standard. Less prone to misting than my XR1000. Might be possible to get away without fitting the Pinlock insert (always find them a bit of a pain though very effective), have to see how it performs in the wet.

Less buffeting than the XR1000 which is a bonus.

If you are in the market for this type of helmet I'd certainly put the Shoei on you list to have a look at.
