Hi
My 02 ADV has tourances both front and rear, the rear is still quite new, the front is still legal but shows 'cupping' between the tread blocks ,which i take as being normal for the tread pattern.
A couple of times in the last few weeks i have a couple of ring clenching moments when the front has 'washed' away a bit, on both ocassions warm tyres ( 20 miles plus) on reasonably tight bends, first time i put it down to dust on the road , now not too sure.
I s the 'cupping' an issue would this cause it ? after all when the weight is on the contact patch it will be flat ?
i will have to replace in a couple of thousand anyway, just thought i would ask the forum
many thanks

Could be a few things, diesel, dust as you say, worn road, going into the turn with a closed throttle. Even after 20 miles the tyre will still be cool although probably in the working temp. Tourances are pants anyway, get some Conti trail attacks and see the light :thumb2

I found that, when running Tourance front and rear

replacing just the rear with a Trial attack, means that even with a tourance front, they are fantastic :thumb

My current front Tourance seems to have "gone off" as it wears down, I have not experienced the cupping, the tyre seems to have worn evenly but the feel is not good on worn tarmac, theres not much left of the tyre now, The rear seems to have done the same thing, just twitchy, Theres no real lack of traction, just an unstable feeling as the tyres approach the end of life, I have a new pair to go on later this week so I will be able to compare.

it seems as i am not alone then !
I have just replaced the rear tourance, could i put a trial attack on the front with the tourance on the rear ?

many thanks

I have had lots of different tyres on the front with a tournce on the back even a knobbly all was ok no nastys or even slightly so at all.

Hello Pomm001, I've done over 50,000 miles on my 1150GS, always on the original style Tourance's. I get up to 12,000 miles from a set if I've been behaving like a wuss! Always get more than 8,000 though and change them as a pair even though the front still has plenty of tread left, albeit a bit "cupped" like yours.

One thing that does happen and gets worse as the rear tyre squares off is that at moderate lean angles you ride onto the tight radii where the squared section blends into the original curvature. This corresponds with the interface between the centre blocks and the outer blocks so you have very little rubber actually on the road. The bike feels like it's letting go, very squirmy, but if you press into the corner harder you get past that point and it feels great again. You can certainly ride a Tourance all the way to the side wall.

The front has always felt so planted that I've only ever had a concern when there has been some sort of mess on the road, either diesel, gravel, sand or similar. Make sure you drive through the corner instead of coasting on a neutral or trailing throttle.

One other point that I just thought of, remember that you have over 8" (200mm) of suspension travel. If you are on an uneven road and the suspension unloads as you are cornering due to a dip in the road for example the front suspension may stretch by 2-3", (conceivably even more on some roads) and this could be the cause of your "washing out" feeling. What were you riding previously and how long have you had the Adventure?

Thanks for that
I only managed to get about 5000 out of the back tyre , looking at the front now maybe i should have changed it at the same time. I used to get the same sort of miles from blade tyres !
I have had the bike for about 4 years, when i first had it had some distanzia ? tyres on, they were 'cupped' like thrupenny bits but the bike felt on rails, whatever it is i am sure a new tyre will fix it , maybe one with a less 'blocky' tread that will wear more evenly

I have trail attacks and think they are super tyres but rear is completly done at 4000 miles!
Was thinking of trying Tourance but not sure now?
Front is fine so maybe just get another conti rear.
Who's cheapest at the mo?

Get a new tyre and all will be well. Once the front end feels dodgy it`s time for new rubber whether there is lots of tread or not:thumb.

Tourance EXP

I have heard that tourance have brought out a new version - Tourance EXP. It is meant to be a bit softer compound to give better grip but wears more quickly as you would expect. Might be worth a try.
