Been looking around to find some new shoes for the GS, I like the tourances and found a good deal on the M&P web site £153 for both front and rear. but I notice there are 'H' rated which I have on mine now, and 'V' rated, has anyone tried the V ratted, whats the difference?

Bikegary, the only difference between V and H rated tyres, is that V rated tyres are rated up to , I think, 150mph. H rated are up to a lower speed. No doubt someone will be able to be more specific. I can't recall the exact figures, but certainly V is hight than H rated. There is no difference in tread pattern, or handling. Its just that the higher rated tyres can cope with the greated forces being exerted on them by higher speeds.

yeah i've got the v-rated jobbies (i think it's 140 mph they're rated up to) and there is no difference that i can discern. apparently its the side-walls which are stiffer in higher rated tyres.... the only downside is that i read somewhere that your insurance will be invalidated if you have a crash and haven't told your broker about your (non-standard!) tyres...

Mike, I don't know either but the GPS was removed from a Honda Blackbird just before the photo was taken.

Plus maybe a difference worth making is the higher rated tyreswill take longer to heat up properly. Again I don't know but it could make sense. The higher rating is for the centrifugal forces that are taken by the tyre being increased obviously with speed.

Well that answers my question, i thought it was to do with the walls for highre speed, but i was wondering whether there was more grip or stability,
I shall just stick to the "H" then.

but what a challange.... 140 out of the GS ... :grin

From Metzeler website "The use of a tyre with higher speed index rating (e.g. “H” instead of “S”) is permitted only if listed in the fitment chart. In any case, especially for speed ratings over 210 km/h the recommendations in the METZELER fitment chart have to be respected."

Looking at the fitment chart they recommend:
R1150GS - H rated
R1150GS Adv - H rated
R1200GS - V rated - how many 1200 owners will fit H rated tyres by mistake d'ya reckon?

For what it's worth, I've been using a rear V rated Tourance with an H rated front on my 1150GS since the autumn. I've not noticed any difference in the warm up times or handling. In fact, after last Sunday, riding about 120 miles on a mixture of dry, wet & muddy roads I can confirm that this tyre combination rocks mightily.

I doubt that......

As long as the tyres are listed for the bike by the manufacturer, and the maximum speed of the bike is less than the stated rating of the tyre, you should be covered.....If you put racing slicks or something silly on, fairy nuff, but BWM's policy is NOT to recommend one manufacturer over another......that's why they come from new with different brands fitted from new.

H & V rated tyres

V is further along in the alphabet than H...............:D :D :D

V Rated

Has anybody else has found that the V Rated Tourance wears quicker than the H rated?

After getting 9,500 miles out of a rear H rated, I've only managed 7,000 miles from a V rated.

Strange but true.

My first set of V Tourances did just over 12000 before replacing and still had about 1mm left.
