Guys,

I recently took my bike onto a nice "road" where I could open it up. I did 14 minute sessions, mainly two of them in a row...

On the 3rd day, I found that either the "road" was slippery, or that my tyres had had too much.

They felt a bit slippery, kind of like I didn't want to trust them. I think I might have overheated them or something (I thought this was history on modern tyres?!). On the edges the "oil" was coming out, such as the tyre was shinies on the edge. The edges also pearled very nicely when the (inevitable) rain came falling down.

I did ask a few others and some said that said "road" was slippery, others said "Huh? whadyamean? 'Road' is fine."

Does anyone have any experience with this happening...?

Hi Mate,

I seem to recall that when tyres over heat they really "blue"? Not that I'd know, King of chicken strip land me!:P  But I'm sure I remember reading that or it could be a sign of incorrect suspension settings and/or wrongly inflated tyres?

Best,
Dave

Hey Pietin,

Yah... know what ya mean. I admit to having maybe a bit too much pressure in the tyres, but the wear of them was nicely orange-peel kinda stuff, just as intended. I.e no big rips or tears off it...

Did you get your GS yet?

Hi Mate.

Yup got an old 1100, hated it, loved it, broke it, fixed it!:P Took some adjusting too, and I'm still trying to get my head round all this Fuel injection lark, but overall, I'm lovin' it.:D

I've been trying to find the mag I read the article in about tyres etc. If I o come across it, I'll scan it and send it to you.

best,

Dave

Re Magazine. Thanks for the offer, but don't bother (save your time, go riding!), I'm just wondering if someone has experienced this with the Tourances tyres. I'm a bit concerned as they're not exactly track day tyres :P :D

Glad you got the bike - if you're up in the Oxon/Bucks area, gizza hollor!

After doing three back-to-back laps of the Nurburgring a couple of years ago, my Tourances were certainly a bit more "squishy" than I would have liked. I let them cool down for an hour or so and they seemed fine again.

Yah, Squishy kind of explains the feeling :)

Wonder where this puts me...

I know the blue oily look that you mean. Got it on Dunlop 207's on my old Fazer600 and got it again on my Tourances on my 1150. Yet to see it on my new BT020's but they have only done 1500miles.

Must be related to the heat of the tyre but I'm not sure it has any detrimental effect. I check my tyre pressures once or twice a week so I'm confident it isn't due to that. I guess its just some element of the rubber being effected by heat. May be more prominent once the tyre is part worn but I aint an expert.

I can't think it's due to the tyre "overheating" because D207's are pretty sporty Z rated tyres and I was using them on a lighweight 600. 99% of the miles were covered commuting to work which is a 35 mile twisty A road. If the Dunlops can't hack that, then my name is Rossi! The tyre must be designed for this and therefore this blueing phenomenon should be very common?!

In my experience 80% worn tourances are pretty poor wet weather tyres.

I used BT-010's on the same piece of "road" on my GSX-R1000, and they were just fine. Not ultimate grip like say, Rennsports, but very very good nevertheless... :)

The BT-010's also got that oily look on the sides, but that didn't seem to affect them at all...

Maybe I should take the GS there again, after all, I do have the season pass :D

I wouldn't worry, every pair of BT 090's on my baby blade looked like that for the 6 weeks they would last on the bike, the Tourances on my GS look the same, and now the 020's on my girfriends SV 650 are the same. no worries with performance at all!:D
