Ok, this might be a bit controversial but which add ons from the Touratech catalogue have you really thought "that's saved the day"? I know Ewan famously said "my touratech panniers saved my life....":clap

Having a new GSA on order I'm wondering which bits are worth buying and which bits are just going to add weight.

Cheers

Mark

For me the best add on bits are not TT ones but the little tiny bits that just make life easy.

1. Jump start post on starter motor cover
2. Burns Moto waterproof usb plug

Those would be my top two

3. Accessory fuse box

and then the fastaway footpegs.

Big expensive things Corbin seat, (by god its comfortable), and Verns panniers the best money can buy.

I'd say the following:

1. New aftermarket Bashplate (if there's any chance you'll go on dirt)
2. Headlight/Oil cooler protector
3. Crashbar Bags - these are not only functional, but also add massive additional protection to the side of the bike if you drop her.

leave those other "protectors" for the reservoirs........ if you damage them, it would have to be a serious fall and the rest of the bike will be stuffed in any event.

If you can get hold of a set of Alu panniers - yes they add protection from the back and sides - however for every day use, too bulky

:beerjug:

The throttle potentiometer cover. It just looks so vulnerable to me that I had to cover it with the TT guard.

I've got two fecking great dents in my oil cooler (the main arteries, not just the fins) and now wish I'd put a protector on from day one .... :blast

I think you'll find that it protrudes more than the unguarded potentiometer, so making it even more vulnerable. :augie :D

And with the "strong" metal cover the lugs on the throttle body break if it does get a decent clout.
Then you're really fecked, even more so than if you didn't have a protective cover to start with :blast:D

Perforated sheet in all a metal of your choice.
Cost me £1.50 for an ali sheet from B&Q, cut it to size and even have some left over.

Of course it doesn't have any fancy names embossed on it, but i don't think that's going to effect what it does, but it's a useful indicator to strangers of your emotional security and self confidence.

as far as the tt panniers im on my second set and both sets have leaked so if i was buying panniers again i would get a set from Roger of Ard cases

the TT side stand extender thing has been very good as is the oil cooler guard and the head guards and the rally pegs have been worth there weight in gold when riding for ages off road.

Some good suggestions. Min two-pennorth: not TT, but a Stebel Nautilus horn. Also a couple of LED driving lights mounted (on a light bar) below & each side of the headlight.

Everything you bolt on will add weight, so the trick is only bolting on the bits you actually need :blast

Steptoes point about the potentiometer cover is a great case in point. I've ridden my bike off road loads and I'm not sure any of the bolt ons have 'saved' anything despite my propesity for crashing. Many of the really robust bolt on parts will simply transfer the impact to a more integral and more expensive part of the bike.

Similarly comfort orientated customisations are a really personal thing. Everybody is different and what suits you won't suit me.

My best suggestion is to hold off spending any serious dosh until you've been to a couple of GS gatherings and ridden a few miles. That way you know what you want to change and you can go and look at other solutions before throwing your own money at it.

You'll probably find most of what you then want in the FS&W section anyway ;)

My bits;

1. Engine head guards collapsed when the bike fell over at a service station and gouged the heads
2. Locking oil filler cap fell apart and excreted its inners into the engine
3. Panniers - they are just fine - but panniers are panniers - lumps of aluminium attached to rails that occasionally get dented and you weld them back together

Get a set of Steptoes headguards and ditch everything else

I agree it's open and vulnerable - however much to my surprise, I had 2 big prangs last weekend - both offroad, both times landing hard on the left-hand side of the bike (once in gravel, once in bush on top of a huge rock) and neither touched or even came close to the TP...:augie

Did realise the massive benefit of a sidestand foot enlargement in soft sand....

A catalogue in each pannier is great for keeping the bike evenly weighted when running empty. Also the stick is great for "saving the day" of your wallet rather than spending all that cash.

My "bits o old screen" screen extenders have been wonderful and my fishbox sidestand big foot has been invaluable...:D

Now, I'm going to be cheeky.....

But you asked about stuff for your new GSA :augie :augie

Take a look at our website. It's all designed by us and manufactured in the UK. And great prices. And if you order before the end of November we've got a 10% discount for UKGSer members. Just quote UKGSER-02 during checkout.

We're all members of this and other bike forums and ride bikes both on and off road regularly.

I got a TP cover off fleeBay as it was cheap.
while fitting it I had the same thoughts as Steptoe in that it probably wont do much protecting in the event of a fall as it is connected to the TP. so any bashing force will be passed onto the TP.
I have fitted it as I think it offers a good degree of anti-tamperproofing (is that a real word?) so it stays fitted :)

I also have the TT brake pedal extender as I kept missing the pedal. its on and it will stay on and I still keep missing the pedal only not so often :augie

bought the TT Sat Nav mounting bar thingy and the TT locking bracket for my Zumo 660. :thumb cant fault it. although it did take me longer than I expected to fit the thing. all those nuts an spacers kept falling out of place. but its all good now :bounce1

I have the TT number plate extender that seems to be effective so stays fitted. not exactly a wallet busting item either.

recently fitted the clear headlight protector and glare shield. this is one of those things you will only regret not having when a stone smashes your headlight.:rob

best TT item I have fitted is this

my bum thinks it was worth every penny!:bow

Non TT items that I think are worth having.

Starcom1 Digital :thumb2 powered from a NN fuze block

and to finish off I have a set of Grip Puppies and very comfy they are to :clap

I'm more concerned that it's me that would kick it and snap the connector off. All I'll do now is kick the guard and no harm done. If I bin it enough to damage the guard or body then I'll have much bigger things to be concerned with.

Anybody tried the Wunderlich Legshields. I see NN are selling the clear plastic ones for £199, seems a lot of money for what they are but if they take the blast off my legs may be worth it. Actually thought about making something like these before I knew they were available. Any comments please.
