Same as the signal minder. I use one and so do many others, does what it says on the packet :nenau.

My only concern with the signalminder is the auto cancelling after 8 seconds. What I like the idea of is to be able to just press the indicator button again to cancel without the auto cancel.

I think this is in the region of £30 as well, as opposed to £60/70? for the signalminder.

Cancel button is adjustable for auto cancelling. From 8 seconds up to 30 seconds or manual cancel as standard.

2nd question - what is canbus? is it something only fitted to later bikes?

Controller Area Network

Rather than the wiring loom just sending power to 'dumb' endpoints around the bike, the can-bus network sends and receives data and instructions to and from 'smart' microcontroller equipped nodes.

There's a fairly technical description here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controller_Area_Network

A slightly simpler BMW bike fosussed one here:
http://www.bmwra.org/otl/canbus/

As far as BMW boxers go it appeared with the 1200's - not sure about K bikes and the singles / twins.

cheers
Matt

The last thing any 11xx owner should consider is fitting that canbus nonsense to their bike... assuming it was even possible - fortunately it isn't.

IMHO the gizmo is a disaster waiting to happen (and frequently does)

Fuses may be old fashioned... but at least they're cheap, readily available and you aren't forced to return the bike to the dealership if it goes wonky.

I know its a rare thing for 1200s to go wonky - but you can visualise it I'm sure...

that's alright then. I'm gona buy one and try it.
Thanks for the replies

Hmm, there's a bit more to can-bus than the elimination of fuses (although the fuse thing is an example of what can be done). Given that our bikes are driven by a computer anyway, it allows for a simpler wiring loom and much more flexibility in the control logic of the bike - up till can-bus this control logic had to be achieved with the bucket loads of relays and diodes which festoon our looms (the sidestand example in the second link I posted above is a good example). Even though it requires intelligence to be embedded in what have hitherto been just dumb, powered 'things' which are either on, off or broken it is also surprisingly fault tolerant (with the right underlying control software) and can allow for 'routing round' or ignoring of failed components. Embedding this intelligence is trivial with modern, cheap microcontrollers. It also allows for simple changes and additions to the logic and connected 'stuff' without wholesale rewiring - just re-flash new software into the can-bus controller (I believe there have been several tweaks to the 1200 in this way).

However, its downside is the increasing complexity and cost of what have up to now been cheap and simple components and the attendant difficulty of fault diagnosis without access to the underlying control logic and expensive diagnostic equipment. In the end, I can see the day where all bikes are equipped with can-bus (or similar) - hell, they've even started fuel injecting Enfields!

But I'm with you in as far as I'd much rather not have can-bus - in fact my next GS will probably be an airhead :)

Good stuff :thumb2 - let us know how you get on. It looks to be a cheaper (although not quite as flexible) option than the Switchminder.

when he gets it ,he will find its very flexible:thumb2

signal minder can be adjusted to how you want it, timed, un timed, brake light delay, the lot

Hmmm - CANBUS - worked at Rover in the 80's when the technology was being tried. Apocryphal story went around of the techs at Canley taking a 3500 with early CANBUS past a large transmitter in the area and loosing the whole electrical system through interference.

Not that I'd ever suggest that current BMW technology even slightly resembles 1980's Rover....

Mind, we used to put paving slabs into the boot of the cars in the winter - hell of a traction control system.

And the Vitesse used to stall on full lock when pulling out of a parking slot...so you had to give a 250HP V8 the beans to keep the PAS pump running in a delicate slow speed manoeuvre. Nice.

And.... oh, now you've got me started...
