Stupid things and a complete waste of time, I slung mine, and now the BHT has got it on his bike. Tosser, can't see feck all now, and it's a waste of time cleaning it, 'cos all the crap get's behind it, all over the headlight glass which is impossible to clean properly.
How many people here, have actually broken the headlight on a motorbike before. I've broken one, about 15 years ago on my Ducati, hit a railway bridge at about 65mph in the snow. I'm not sure, but I don't think a piece of plastic would have helped much that night.
Headlight covers are like buying a hassleblad, and putting a two bob filter over the lens (ask a grown up!)
 
If all you do is ride on the street you have no need for a light guard. You will need a guard when riding in the dirt w/ other GS riders, 'cause sure enough one of them will fling a rock at your light. Have you see the amount of dirt and rock a GS throws into the air on a spirited dirt ride.

I bought one of these things for my GS in the summer when I first got it. The reason being, I had already done TWO headlights in one winter on my KTM Supermoto commuting to town. This made me very scared about the cost of replacements should this happen on the GS.

However, I'm pretty cheesed off with the reflection though. Might try the cut down spacer route.
 
I tried a different solution in that I bought the cockpit tidy as well as the headlight protector from Nippy's. Not only does it look the mutts nuts, it also stops 99% of the reflected light. You do get a little off the screen, but not enough to cause a distraction/accident!
 
Anyone tried to paint the edge of the plastic protector black (or any opaque color really)...

Is the reflection coming back from the light facing surface of the protector? or light-piping out the edge?

the best solution IMO is to cut down the spacers & fixing bolts so the top of the headlight cover tucks under the silver instrument binnacle cover.

no more relected light* & it looks much neater too.

i have previously posted what i consider the best length to chop the bits down to, try a search if interested. if that doesn't find it, i'll remeasure it.

* it just wastes it somewhere else. the perspex TT cover is rather crap as vern says which is why i have one here on my desk & not on the bike :)

Yes, I have tried both painting the edge and also putting a tapered piece of plastic strip on the edge as well.

Better, but no cigar!

To be quite honest, the best solution, is to remove it at night!!!

Even if you cut the spacers down and add a little rubber grommit to the centre bridge to keep the perspex away from the headlight glass, it still tends to mark the dip beam headlight glass a light bit.

The problem is that at speed the plastic deflects a little and fretts against the glass, thus causing the problem.
