Before I go ahead and order the wrong thing… has anyone had any issues with the Touratech Waterproof tank bag (055-1132 or 055-1134) on the 1200 Adventure?

I notice that their ‘normal’ tank bag (055-1124) is listed for the ‘R1200GS/Adventure’ and is 16/22 litres, whereas the 'Waterproof' one is only listed for the R1200GS and is 16/26 litres capacity.

I’ve got the original BMW GS tank bag and it’s too big at the front, fouling the handlebar cross-brace on full lock, so I’m looking to change. I think the choice is between the new BMW one and a Touratech waterproof one.

HI Ballistic,
I have just ordered the touratech waterproof back (part no 1132/1134) from the local importer - they have confirmed it works well with a 12gsa lock to lock and does not get in the way of the cross bar. My experience with them (the importer) has been excellent so I am confident what they tell me will be true. I should receive it tomorrow and am off for 1000k jaunt on the weekend - so will be able to confirm this to you after the weekend...

Gswiss,
I've just had a word with Touratech UK and they say that the bag will foul on the crossbrace if it's on a later model GSA... apparantly, the crossbar position has been altered from the early ones.
My GSA is a 2007 model so I'm worried.
Is it possible for you to try your bag on the bike tomorrow, and let me know before you go away at the weekend?... my local BMW dealer has a BMW bag waiting for me on Saturday.
Thanks :thumb2

The obvious change is the BM fog light switch position. On the pre 07 models it was on the left of the handlebars and the cross brace is "below" it. The latest have the fog's switch bolted onto the handlebar mounts, and the brace is much closer to the handgrips.

Well I took my 07GSA to Metal Mules who have an 06 version. Whilst talking about Panniers they showed me their Baglux Tank Bag range. Is does not fit and Baglux knew nothing of the change to the 07 crossbrace and positioning. They took piccies to get over to Baglux so hopefully there will be a change there in supply!!

There is however a noticeable difference over positioning of the crossbrace which could affect tank bags bought. The bars are also ever so slightly deeper too. It is best to mention the year when purchasing - but John is right the Fog Switch has also moved - the 06 I tried in January as a demo was elsewhere - more awkward to use now!!

Mine TT bag (16/26) works fine with my 2006 GSA - lightswitch mounted by the left hand grip. Why BuMW moved the switch to sit on the crossbrace is a mystery.

Would be easy enough to move back, I guess.

PS The waterproofing comes from a simple Gortex bag inserted into the tankbag. A plastic bag from Woolies or Tescoids will do the job.

OK now I'm all nervous :( - as my model is the '07 with the foglight switch under the cross bar (why did they do that?) - so I will try and send you a note if can before leaving - at least the return policy is good with these guys.
cheers

Hey Ballistic got the bag - great service :D but the back fouls on the cross bar as you thought... ....called the guys and they say they have tried this on '07's with no problems...they mentioned perhaps the raking of the handle bars....as mine do seem quite swept back....but no more time to fiddle before the trip so the bag goes back to Touratech, and I take a rucksack..good luck.
GSwiss
BTW with the raking i have, simply removing the cross bar would not help as on full lock the handle bars touch bag on the side - and this with the bag empty - perhaps with the bar off and the raking adusted - but I like the bars the way they are...

To ballistic and others who are interested - as a post mortem on the touratech bag fitting on the '07 GSA - I need manage to set it up right. The raking of the handle bars from where I had them had to go back (up) a little (the position is actually a little better for me) and I had to remove the foam padding around the corss bar. The cross bar remains and nothing fouls (though very close) - and I can get lock to lock on steering. So there you have it - thought you should know.

Could always remove the cross brace :) unless you're going off road

I think you've hit the nail on the head there, John.
I've taken the cross-brace off and the original (large) bag seems to fit more easily than it did on the standard 1200: I've so far noticed no difference in feel, but haven't been off-road.
When I'm 'touring' with tank bag and top box etc. I tend to take it easy when going off-road anyway, so the lack of cross-brace shouldn't be a problem.
As much as I'd like a Touratech tank bag, it's got some great touches, I think I'll just keep the one I've got and save myself the cost of a couple of ferry crossings.:thumb
