Hi everyone my mate persuaded me to go on a track day at The Ron Haslem school at Silverstone on my 06 gs, I am looking forward to it but what should I expect from my bike along side all the race reps Boo

I'd expect to be trading your bike in by about lunchtime

Seriously it will be a total waste of time and you're more likely to cause an accident by just getting in the way but undoubtedly you will be subjected to the inevitable "you cant beat a well rideen GS" lines v shortly

Well, as you know... You can't beat a well ridden GS

However, it isn't really the tool for the track.

I've done a few Ron Haslam events - but all at Donington. The GS will be in the way on the straights and for the most part, round the corners. The day could be a lot of fun, or could be quite frustrating for you and may make you feel uneasy - or you may be too concerned about the other bikes coming up on you to relax and get the most out of the day.

Most track days will usually split the event into fast and slow groups, so you could be riding round just as quickly as a nervous rider on their S1000RR.

All the above depends on whether or not it is an open event with any bike goes of course, but any bike ridden slowly can get in the way, whether it's a GS or a GP bike!

That said the most fun I've ever had on track was competing in the CCM challenge Supermoto events - but all the bikes were the same, being a one make series.

Dont worry about anyone else on track, its not a race its a track day, Big difference. You paid your fee like everyone else on track.

I did the Race School a couple of times on the 600's and another couple of the Fireblades - you had to do the 600's before they would allow you on the Blades - but all the days were fun - a work colleague came off badly and hasn't been right since. So... listen to instructors and build speed steadily instead of forcing it.

Most importantly - have fun!

This is the only track day I would consider,(on their bikes) u do know if it all goes tits up your bike insurance aint goin to cover you.

Yes, your bike will be one of the slowest, and yes, it'll get whooped in a straight line. But you stand every chance of sharing the track with other novice track day riders who will be just as nervous as you!
I would put money on the fact that you'll have a few first timers who will teeter round the track and be slower than you

It's all about having fun and learning what you and your bike can do, feck the rest of them, it's not a race - enjoy (and you will, believe me)!

Probably....but that is Cadwell Park which is probably the best circuit in the country for a GS, with the possible exception of Anglesey which I've only ever seen on video.

I did a trackday at Knockhill in '05 on the GS and a K1200S. On the GS, I couldn't stay with the two Boxer Cup race bikes which were out that day but I did have a good dice with a GSXR600 and got past him round the outside at Hislops until he got me back under brakes into the Hairpin. That was until I came into the pits and discovered he was on a GSXR1000 and couldn't ride for.....

It's all been said above. If everyone behaves you'll be fine. You may be the slowest but if you're in the novice group you'll be with like minded riders no matter what they're riding. Everyone is worried about dropping their bike. The trouble comes with the track bike riders who arrive in a van and don't mind dropping their bike.

Go and enjoy an opportunity to practice riding the way you can't do on the road. I've been round Knockhill a few times. First time years ago on the Aprilia school bike. Then on my wee Ducati. Then more recently on the GS. I'm a real wuss but I lapped a nervous Firlbalde rider on a damp evening.

I've also had a spin on my lad's bike and that is something else.
