Track day

Great list Greg... :thumb
  • Anglesey (01407 840253)
  • Cadwell Park (01507 343248)
  • Castle Coombe (01249 782417)
  • Goodwood (it's just been fully resurfaced) (01243 755060)
  • Lydden Hill (01304 830557)
  • Mallory Park (01455 842931)
  • Oulton Park (01829 760301)
  • Pembrey (01554 891042)
  • Snetterton (01953 887303)

Angelsey... its a nice short track with some interesting apexes that can catch you out... especially as you come out of the hairpin and get momenterily distracted by the views down to the sea... its the track that Tiff Nidel uses on 5th Gear... :D

Cadwell... very technical... including blind apexes... don't get caught out by the Goose Neck... and it has to be the FULL circuit to include The Mountain.. Woo Hoo... :thumb

Mallory...has the longest bend in the Wooorld... Gerards.. you're that far over you can even get your elbow down :bounce1 ... Edwinas chicane took the fun out of the Esses and now they've stuck another one after Gerards... so know where near as much fun as it used to be... :(

Oulton Park looks like a corker as its challenging on the twisty stuff and has lots of up and down hill sections that would really test the GS.... :thumb

Snetterton is a typical R1 / GSXR track as it has long fast sections and not too much of the twisty stuff...

Oh and Rockingham always gets bad press as its flat... and the surface shreds your tyres in the dry and has you on your arse in the wet... :eek

Oh dear... can you tell I'm a little excited... :mmmm :bounce1 :bounce1

Wherever you go, you will need leathers. I can't think of a circuit that will let you out without full one-piece or zip-together (with an all round zip) leathers......unless it's the aforementioned Laguna Seca where they seemed to be letting people on the circuit in denims during a lull in practice for last year's Moto GP.

ermm.. acksherley, I've just done a Track Skills training day at Cadwell with a guy called Martin Hopp http://www.hoppridertraining.co.uk/BetterRiding.asp and you don't need leathers, unless you are in the 'expert' group. Cordura is fine, as long as it zips together.
Ok, maybe not a pure Track Day as such, but good fun none the less.

Edwinas chicane

You've just taken me back 30 years!! Dear Edwina Overend. I gather she died a couple of years ago, but she was Mallory Park!

My vote goes for Croix, we are all supposed to be adventurists after all :)

If not, Cadwell would get my vote for a GS day.

Donnington also suffers as a crashers track in the wet. Too much avaition crap falling on it. As much as I'd like to do Donnington at some point, I'd rather do it on a proper bike (did I just say that, bugger) Sorry guys :)

Been to Rockinghams National circuit four times now, admittedley not in the wet. I didn't think it was any harder than other circuits on tyres. It does have elevation changes in the circuit aswell, perhaps not as many as the older tracks though. What it does have going for it is, more left handers than some other tracks, excellent facilities, consistent surface, a LOT of run off (just in case you get overexcited like me :nono ) and its fairly central in the country.

Still love Cadwell though :D

Yes please, but really would prefer any track other than Donnington on a GS (even though 'Dono' is on my door step).

FWIW, Cadwell Park would get my vote.

Cheers
Andres

Just in case there's anybody considering this, but put off by the possibility of overcooking it and landing in the proverbial :D

You can get a quote for trackday insurance from here just make sure your sat down before you get the quote

I've no connection with them and haven't used them, just thought it might be of interest to someone :thumb

Trackday in the OFFROAD section

Castle Coombe is good sport, but noise prohibatations.

Its fast and some great corners, Thruxton 2pm pissed at 17 in a FORD FIESTA

Yes please. Never been on a track before, unless you count walking round Brands, and would love to do this..Best put me in the slow group!

I'm up for it Vern, this has been attempted a few times over the past couple of years and has always fallen by the wayside with too few takers to do a full on GS Day circuit takeover.
For the trackday virgins i would recommend the HoppRider Training events at Cadwell Park. July 11th and Sept ?? are the next ones.
Its slightly more than a track day as such but what you get is expert tuition by Cadwell experts (as well as 'ring experts), placement in groups and you learn the track in the AM and go solo PM.
I've done quite a few of Martins days now and keep going back. Its an ace circuit for the GS, and its speed limitations, and a great place to show the race rep boys up on the bends!

As I was enquiring for someone else anyway, I asked the good folk at Croix how much exclusive weekday track hire is.

Answer €2200 + 19.6% VAT (total about £1880)

There aren't too many dates available and if you want marshals, paramedics, breakdowns etc, that's all extra.

Over to you ..........

Greg

Donnington is better on a GS than Snetterton.Snetterton is simply flat out everywhere and tends not to be too kind to GS's.Donnington is very technical ,but very wide and great fun.if on a general track day,get into the slow group and simply blast round at your own pace. :D
Have done Rockingham in the wet and it seemed ok,and Lydden in a hail storm, that was interesting.Any track is a good track. :thumb

Yes please

Sounds like a blast and having only ever riden around one track before  would go with whatever venue offers the best all round combination of fun for a mixed level of riders.

Sounds interesting - I would recommend Mallory as it is cheaper than lots of tracks with no long straights and relatively easy to learn. Gerrards was a real hoot (see below) - not sure about it since they put the extra chicane in though.

On a Monkey bike maybe.

Riches (first bend after start) has a very fast approach and is not quite as fast through the bend.

Large on the binders for Sear which is the most important corner on the track as it precedes the Revett Straight (long and straight!!). The Esses and the Bombhole precede Coram which is more challenging than Gerrards. Finally, Russell hasn't been flat for many years!!

minority of one !

I must admit, the whole track day thing makes me puke !
If you want to race, Race !
Wobbling round a circuit with a bunch of ponces and then listening to how fast they were going really makes my teeth grate.

I would rather spend the money actually riding somewhere.

I hear people actually turn up in vans with tyre warmers.

Lets just all buy jet skis and live in Essex.

Remember when motorcycles were transport ?
