Trail Riding Hints & Tips

Practice makes perfect:augie

True! But summer has made an appearance so it's mainly dusty days ahead, which will give me plenty of time to learn the ropes before I wade into oversized puddles!

Most important thing

Never ride alone and always carry a first aid kit. It doesn't take much for a bit of a trail ride to turn into a disaster :thumb2

Very good advice of course but I bimble along at my slow sedate pace, on my own most of the time, and never carry a first aid kit either.

It all depends I suppose on how many mates you've got around at the time you want to go out and if you know how to use a first aid kit in the first place.

I do adopt the rule though that if I'm not sure, I simply turn round and go find another trail.

Carry a spare split link for the chain! A mate with a van is handy, but you're going to have to push your bike a fair way back to a main road. Don't ask me how I know this or ask why I am posting it today:blast:blast:blast:D

How do you guys raise the front end to get the wheel off for an inner tube change while on the trails?

I would defiantly recommend riding with a friend. Recent Morocco trip with ABW Tours saw me viscously attacked by a mountain resulting in a broken wrist (which I didn't know about until visiting hospital a week after I did it). Excellent medical back up and support truck with trailer resulted in minimal delay for the rest of the lads and a comfy ride for me.

Front punctures, place bike on handy rock and remove wheel.
Rear punctures, ditto.

Jeez ...

How did you manage to embed a biro in your hand whilst you were riding along ??

:eek

One of my many offroad skills, together with face planting in sand dunes, superman dives into rock filled fields and making Skygod collapse from laughing so much.

Grez, you're a legend:bow:D

Don't forget the classic "lets have an involuntary lay down on the track" moment..........closely followed by Skygod with "this may smart a little".............hence the face

Me again! So, I'm really getting into this off road lark! I'm like a child who that wants to go play after school, which is what I've been doing...finish work home at 5, get kitted up and off to the trails for a couple of hours. There are a couple of 4x4 'parks' that have some seriously steep hills that got the better of a pal yesterday!!

Anyway, all this frolicking leaves me in a dusty and muddy state, which Mrs Denny does not approve of seeing as she does the cleaning. I've been using my road riding jacket & trousers which are a pain to wash (apparantly) and take ages to dry! Aside from the cleaning, I anticipate severe over heating come summer when the temps are in the 30's.

I'm now looking into MX clothing and protection, probably one of those vests with armour on arms/back/front to start off with and a discreet jersey (none of those neon X Games tops). What's the deal with knee pads...are they worn directly over the skin? Can see them stinking up pretty damn quick. Are there loose 'enduro' trousers out there, preferably ones that are worn over boots?

Suggestions appreciated...remember that it's 25-28 degrees here already, and will be 30+ from mid June onwards.

Cheers
D

I haven't quite reached 30C rides offroad but where I've ridden in the heat I've put up with some second hand kit from Geezers on here: BMW summer trousers (with integral armour) and a BMW body armoured shirt.

When it's hot you're going to get hot and as far as I can tell the only solution is a fairly high capacity hydro-pack to combat dehydration.

If you fancy the MX kit give it a go but I'd prefer to avoid the gravel rash by having some Codura over my skin.

One thing in my favour is that my crashes are rarely fast. :augie
