Trangia Fuel

What liquid fuel do people use in these burners?
I just tried the Coleman one and it’s sooty as fuck! Took me longer to get everything clean again than it did to boil the water!
Are there any low / non soot ones out there?

I'll be buggered if I'm gonna piss around with liquid fuels or the equivalent.
My jetboil works well enough for me whether it's a cup of coffee or a big pan for a meal.

If it’s the spirit burner you are talking about then meths or panel wipe or any of the gel stuff die I fix to spirit burners.

If it’s the multi- fuel adapter I find Aspen fuel very good.

Depends on which burner you have.

If you just have the little pot, then meths or burning alcohol. (add a little water to the meths to stop so much sooting)

If you have the standard gas burner, then the normal cans (screw top resealing) camping gas, butane/propane mix. Don't try other fuels through this as it's only designed for the cans of gas.

If you have the multifuel burner, you can use Colman Fuel or petrol using the pressure bottle, or the aforementioned gas cans.

I was thinking about getting a spirit burner and read that meths with 10% water was the fuel of choice to avoid sooting.

I buy small bottles of meths from screwfix that I use at work (code 13028).

Aspen 4T in the Coleman North Star and 442 stove.
It's basically distilled petrol with no benzine and other shite.
Gummed up generators and sooty glass are a distant memory.

Mower starts first pull every spring also!

I have already got an MSR Windburner for gas use and just got this burner for liquid fuels. This is what turned black with soot earlier when I used Coleman fuel. Won’t be using that again!

Meths and other alcohol based fuels only in that. They burn generally very clean. Some soot from the stuff they add to meths to colour and give it a bad taste& smell, so the white stuff if you can get it is better than the blue meths. However it is a very slow way of heating stuff up. OK if you have time and patience and if you don't need to get your pan very hot, eg frying. Best addition to a Trangia is a gas conversion.

As you can see, the basic recommendation from Trangia (who should know) is to use methylated spirits.

PS Would you not be better off buying an Omnifuel burner from say, Primus? https://www.primus.eu/primus-omnifuel-p328989/ then selling the MSR Windburner and Trangia?

PPS If you intend to use gas…. In the UK most of the gas canisters have the screw on ‘Lindal’ valve. This valve is not always so common elsewhere, which will leave you with a bemused look, whilst you hold your burner in one hand and the foreign gas canister in another. Buy some adaptors. +1 I have the omnifuel brilliant bit of kit, use gas where canisters are available and petrol when not.

I remember the old man telling tales from his National Service days in the RAF of fellow Brillcream boys drinking meths and going round the twist.

Udders, with the multi or omnifuel burner, you can use the gas canisters or petrol (from the pressurised bottle) as stated above.

As you have stated, you have a firebox stove so that you can use wood etc. when available or suitable to where you are cooking.

With the Firebox, which you can use the multifuel burner in, then all you need is a selection of pans/kettle/Zebra Billy pot and your cookset is complete.

It may be worth watching a few YouTube videos. 'Simon - A bloke in the woods' has a few advice videos about different stoves he uses and why, and which different pots and pans he uses etc. Worth having a look. Also, look at the Firebox Stove YouTube channel for ideas of how you can use that stove with all the different burners, as well as using billy cans to bake and roast etc.
