wintec and autocom

HI all, update on the noise thing.........
try a 1:1 transformer in the audio output from the radio to the autocom, thus removing a ground loop, then put a 2.2k resistor across the mic pos and ground, the ground for mic comes from the autocom ptt pin in the 5 pin din(grey plug on autocom), which only grounds out when the autocom goes into a vox state, thus providing the earth for the mic , but only when required.
if you are stuck pm me and ill send an email from the manufacturer.
cheers all, Paul;)

I had an identical problem earlier in the year and tried loads of things to remedy it. If the problem does not exist with the engine off have a good listen to the front engine cover at idle. Is there a metal on metal sound(similar to a worn bearing type sound).
I have a motorola radio powered from the bike and connected through an Autocom Active 7 also bike powered. When the engine was off there was no feedback noise when transmitting to others but as soon as the engine was running the noise returned. It all worked fine until I put the bike into the dealers to have a new engine cover replaced under warranty. When they replaced the cover this noise (which I didn't notice at first) appeared. I had 4 sepearate engine covers and all had the same problem. Eventually my dealer (John Clark, Dundee)spoke with BMW in Germany regarding the replacement covers and it turned out the replacements were being manufactured to a slightly different tolerance to the originals. Something to do with the finish coating I believe. The end result was a new cover with a tiny amount of machining to the inside where the output shaft to the altenator drive was rubbing creating a high pitched metal on metal noise. As soon as this was done my radio system returned to its former glory and I've had no problems since. As a precaution I fitted an inline suppressor to the power supplying the battery eliminator and have had crystal clear transmissions since.
Feel free to PM or e mail me and I can try and go into more detail.
This may not be your problem but I know I tried all sorts of electrical solutions before finally working this out.
Try listening to your bike at idle next to another identical bike and the noise may well be present. It's not the most obvious sound but it is possible to hear at idle and tends to remain constant despite an increase in engine speed (which sounds odd I know but I can only report what I found).
In any case best of luck because I know how many hours I spent in the garage scratching my head over this one!:thumb

GSRich, I'm home now and tried the power cct filter you sent and it never made any difference, I tried it in the Autocom power cct first and then the radio power cct.
I called Autocom again today but without them seeing the installation they are also struggling to suggest anything. I have the bike booked into my local BMW dealer for a service next week and they will have a look and see if they can come up with anything RE the comms but I'm now considering trying to prove if it's the radio or not. I'm thinking about buying a battery eliminator for a Kenwood TK3101 and then asking someone I know to lend me their radio just to try and see if there is any noise when transmitting with it. If this fixes the problem then I'll just buy a new radio and try to sell the wintec A80, it's a good wee radio but maybe just not suitable for a 1200GS for whatever reason.

GSRich, I've just been having a play with the system again tonight, Is there a chance it could be the lead for the Wintec A80 from the Autocom? I managed to get it so there was hardly any interference by just unplugging it from the gray plug a couple of times, I also managed it by unplugging the double pin plug that plugs into the radio itself, It's a hit or miss by the way and is not gauranteed to clear the interference when plugged back in. Becasue I'm inpaitent I've been looking at Kenwood TK3201 radio on the net and have found one from Crystal Radio systems for £107:50 so far which does beat Autocoms price by a good margin.
Is the lead from the Pro 7 sport to the wintec totally different from the one I'd need to connect the Kenwood TK3201?

Well I didn't get it sorted with the Wintec and ended up buying a Kenwood
TK3201 (from Crystal radio system on the web for £126 including VAT) and the lead from Autocom. The Noise is now gone. Autocom were great trying to help. They sent me another lead to try incase there was a problem with the first but it was the saem problem I had. One strange thing I noticed was that when the Wintec Dummy bettery was not being used and it was on it's own battery it caused the radio to display "Prog" on the display which it didn't do on the dummy battery.Anyway I had enough trying things and getting nowhere and problem now sorted with new radio. The wintec is a great wee radio and it in itself is fine nothing wrong with it it just justed seem to get on with the Autocom or the GS. So there's a spare Wintec radio and Autocom lead if someone wants one, I know for a fact they work no problem with Intarides system as my mate has one with no problem. Thanks to all who offered advice and tried to help.
