Trans America Trail 2013

Sheeeeiiiittt! He was lucky to get up and walk away, he could easily have broken a leg or worse his back or neck in a fall like that. Hope he got out ok cos it looked a bit deserted.

I watched this last week!....
It certainly does get the blood moving! Ferking ell! I didnt see that on the road book:D
Im in ABQ Wednesday night, see ya'll there

:D

Eagle Canyon, about UT 230.

Spoil sport!

On the subject of accommodation, try and avoid the "diamond A" motel in Fort Mcdermitt, Nevada. By far the grotiest motel we have stayed in so far. :barf

It's ok, Bakerman will think it's TU 320

We're luckily planning to miss Fort Mcdermitt and go straight through to Denio Junction.

Good call! Dave and . Are currently in Denio junction ( population 37 ) and loving it. Walked through the door to the motel to get a room, and so far have drunk them out of all the local beers, and a lot of the mainstream stuff.

Denio junction stop doing food at 7 pm, so make sure here by 6.30.

While Denio junction isn't far from fort Mcdermitt, it is a slow dusty Rocky trail, with cows. It took pinkutiff and myself 4 1/2 hours to do the 70 ish miles to get here.
As I said it is rocky, with a few nasty ruts to deal with, and there are lots of road book points to. And gates.

A challenging ride, Bit worth it for the hospitality when you get here.

Nathan

Dave/Nathan,
Can you do me a favour and give me your start and end points for each day so far, starting from Moab? We are planning Moab-GreenRiver-Richfield-BorderInn-Eureka-BattleMountain-DenioJunction-LakeView-Gilchrist-Canyonville-PortOrford

but it's all guesswork .. cheers G

That's quality:D:D

Not sure how you can get that so wrong:blast sounds like he was trying to stop it stalling, I'd have probably chosen the clutch as a safer option to opening the throttle:D
Him mate is probably less embarrassed about paddling now:augie

He did a huge Freudian after-the-fact analysis of his state of mind over on Adv Rider. He claimed he had not been aware of the hazard to the left, and that his 'go to' default behaviour was 'if in doubt, gas it out'. Yeah, of course, right over a fucking cliff.

It's quite common for some riders to inadvertently open the throttle when the back end kicks, in this case he'll already know now he should've been rolling the throttle slightly and using his momentum, if anything.

I've not seen the analysis:rolleyes: but couldn't help stopping the vid just at the point where his front wheel first hit the small rocks and wondered if my front wheel would have been just to the right of them.

Maybe we have to factor in, heat, exhaustion and dehydration so I'm reserving judgement until we've ridden up it and remember Gaz, there's far more technical places in N Wales:thumb

PS. There's always this safety option:D

on pussy Hertfordshire lanes I'm no expert on these things but I am glad that my default 'we have a situation' action is to dip the clutch.

Well I would be glad if the situation was the one in the video, when going down a chalky decent and it's getting out of hand that default action of mine is pretty stupid.

Im gald I live in a soft southern county :D

Yes I know exactly what you mean, using that default downhill on a classic trials bike usually ends in...well, it just ends:D

After watching many expert Classic trial riders I've had to re learn and leave the clutch well alone, uphill too even when you 'think' it's going to stall, it's all done on the throttle
Very different style to dipping the clutch on an enduro bike and going down wet chalk!:thumb

I think his speed is too slow going into the obstruction. If he'd have had a little more momentum he'd have gone up there no problem, if not it'd have been even more spectacular, worth the risk I'd say :D

Chalk............good for blackboards, not for riding on :blast

Also good for trying eat young goats:D

It was not long before someone knocked at the door and called out, "Open the door, children dear, your mother is here, and has brought something for each one of you."

But the little kids knew from the rough voice that it was the wolf.

"We will not open the door," they cried out. "You are not our mother. She has a soft and gentle voice, but your voice is rough. You are the wolf."

So the wolf went to a shopkeeper and bought himself a large piece of chalk, which he ate, making his voice soft. Then he came back and knocked at the door, calling out, "Open the door, children dear. Your mother is here and has brought something for each one of you."

But the wolf laid one of his black paws inside the window:blast. The children saw it and cried out, "We will not open the door. Our mother does not have a black foot like you. You are the wolf."

Sounds like a cheaper option that sweeties :D

After hours of reviewing the fall from the TAT trail video I can confirm what would have prevented it...

The accident was clearly caused by a combination of target fixation and uncoordinated use of the bikes controls (throttle, clutch and steering) - without a doubt this accident could have been avoided if....

The rider had spent more time in his earlier days of training mastering U-Turns :D

Mate it's another case of the camera not quite showing what it's really like...those rocks are a lot bigger than they look! To be honest though the climb up the river bed to get to the start of that section makes this bit pale into insignificance :thumb

The bad news.

Seems like Gaz's TAT is over before it started only 120 miles up the road from ABQ and the gearbox appears to have a terminal fault.
:(

Poor Gaz, that is a blow

Is it clutch or gearbox?

Looks like Klim are doing good business though

Hope he gets it fixed asap

Gearbox we think, clutch and cover are new and we could find nothing wrong except for a debatable lack of oil, debatable because the bike had been on it's side a while, I believe the bike had been overheating previously.

Drive sprocket also appeared to be incorrectly fitted and some horrible noise when turning the shaft, bike will only select first and neutral.

It'll be very interesting to find what exactly's wrong and what caused it.

In the meantime we're of course hoping for a miracle fix and Gaz and rejoin us
..........it's his shout:beerjug:
