For many years I have steadfastly argued that there is no need e to go to North America as I just have to turn on TV to see American "culture". I have been to South America (and (pg) will return) but now at advanced age wondering am i right about that Northern part?

I have looked at Trans America trail and it appeals as it seems to touch "real" America and challenges my pre conceptions ( that appeals to me I am always open to learn.)

Anyone have thoughts on such a trip? Have you done it?

Ask the question in another way. If you wanted to take few months out of rat race where would you go on bike?

Forget what you see on the telly, riding in the US is superb. Travelling on a bike is the only way to cross the states and the locals love it!! It`s part of their "road Trip" culture. I`ve done East West on my GS and found the roads to be superb, the people nothing but helpful and friendly and the scenery is awesome!!

I`m thinking of the TransAmerica trail for 2009 and you can get good info from Adventure rider. The trail is all off road on dirt tracks. You will be in the middle of nowwhere most of the time but I`m looking forward to it.

It`s resonably cheap to get your bike out there, living is cheap, fuel is cheap and the Yanks love us Brits. I`ve been to most states now and can recommend it to anyone. It`s not just long straights.....

If you want any info or more advice, give me a call!!

Did a 3mth trip (11,000 miles) on an 1100 GS in 2004 and would totally agree with Bilko. Visiting the different states is almost like visiting different cultures and the scenery is amazing & varied.

My riding was all blacktop except for a couple of fire road excursions, mainly around the North Rim of the GCanyon, totalling only 70 ish miles.

The riding and scenery in the West is much better then Mid and east USA IMHO.

How about the Continental Divide Trail? Shorter than the Trans Anerica but can be quite tough in parts and will allow you more time in the West/South West :thumb2:thumb2
