Guys - my Windows 7 PC is dying & I'm thinking of buying a Mac - probably a MacBook Air 13 inch. I've tried Windows 8 & don't like it.

If I buy a MacBook Air - is there a straight-forward way to transfer all my data, which is mainly photos & word docs. Also I'm using Windows Live Mail - can this be transferred too ?

I'm familiar with ipad etc, never tried a MacBook though.

Can I use MS word / excel on a MacBook ?

Thanks - sorry if it's been covered before, couldn't find it with a quick search.........

John

I have never used it but macs when you fire them up 1st time can copy files from previous macs and pcs.

See http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1557 where there is an object you install on your win 7 machine and then you mac hauls items via network.

Personally have not used it - so can't say it will be perfect, you may need to transfer other items that don't go across via usb drive unless your a network guru.

Word/Excel, is available for the mac so yes - you would need to buy but for mac its normally cheaper than for windows.

You can open Word and excel files in Apple Pages and Numbers. And the other way to (Apple software is compatible with the MS software)

Buckingham/John, whilst you can use Apple Pages and Numbers for basic stuff it doesn't support macro's from Excel etc. If you buy a version of "Office for Mac" you're away with full functionality. I was a Windows/Microsoft user for 20+years & thought Mac was just for Graphic Designers etc, I changed to Mac 4 years ago & would never buy a PC again. So easy & rarely crashes or 'hangs' however mays Apps or 'windows' are open. If you have an Apple store near to you talk to them first, go buy it from there and they will help you sort the file transfers etc.

Agreed Jonno,

I work in the IT game - spend my days looking after Win PCs and Servers. I live on a Mac - I get so much more done - seriously. Get a new machine - changeover <1hour and I carry on.

Old machine 3 years old - work 50%+ of what I paid for it - only change for more grunt and less liable to fail and even if it did I would just buy another machine and be up and running in less than a day.

Re office - all true re numbers vs excel - you can also use libre office for free on a mac - closer to excel but again not perfect so it depends - if its simple stuff then numbers or libre office will be fine, if you just want an easy life am affraid to say you may need to go microsoft for your office suite.
