I have Mapsource installed on my laptop. Have just bought a little Samsung NC10 netbook for taking away on the bike - but it doesnt have a DVD drive. Can someone please tell me how to put Mapsource onto the netbook. Thanks - :green gri

Mapsource is easy..just d/load it free from the Garmin website and install it :)

The mapping is a different matter and you'll either need to network the laptop with your desktop machine and transfer whatever mapping you want over or buy a cheap external hard drive and use that (probably the best option as you'll run into the same problem many times more as you try and install stuff, and the HD on your laptop isn't that big) or an external DVD drive to do the same.

A 2 gig usb memory stick is the cheapest way of doing it though...load up the maps on it from your desktop machine than poke it up the hole in the laptop to install :)

Fanum,
Just off phone to guys at Garmin. I cannot download a full version of Mapsource free from the Garmin website - just updates to an already owned version. Can I copy the Mapsource folder in C drive of my desktop, and paste them into the netbook. Also, re the mapping, can i select maps I need and copy them onto an SD card. Zumo already has Europe pre-installed; Im a bit confused about the whole mapping thing?

Mitch,
The Mapsource folder on my computer is only 1.55GB - it comprises of Mapsource_6134.exe (Application), and a file folder called CNEURNT9, which contains a whole load of IMG files. Do I just copy this onto an external storage, and paste them into the C drive of the netbook?

Sorry a bit missleading. My original disc CITY NAVIGATOR NT+ Europe v8
setup and map data DVD. Its the first one you have to install before any map updates you can copy to a usb stick [2gb]. Put usb into NC10 and install.

City Navigator NT Europe v9 Update DVD is 7.52GB.

Hope this helps,

Mitch

Just done the same thing. Geta usb memory stick load dvd onto usb on old laptop then plug it in to NC10 and install job done. All working ok for me.
You do need a 8gb usb tick http://www.7dayshop.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=777 l got the DANE ELEC 8GB works ok.

Mitch

Brilliant, thanks, for some reason I thought this wasn't possible and needed to buy a dvd drive. Just done it and got Mapsource and CN2008 loaded on my S10 :clap

No...you need to install it or the programme won't be in the registry.....so you need to copy the original disk onto the external storage then install it from that, or copy it onto the c drive and install from there.

Still not getting this. I have an external hard drive - do I copy all the files from the original City navigator NT v9 disc onto the external drive, then copy them into the netbook. Once installed, what do I do with the files I copied in to the netbook ??? Sorry for the confusion...

Yes....copy all of the files into a single folder on the laptop, or on the external device.....plug that into the laptop and it effectively becomes a virtual DVD

(Some DVD's won't install like this, but it appears that Mapsource and the mapping ones will)

Browse to the install.exe within this folder and double click it.....it'll all install- allow it to stick itself where it wants but it must be a different folder from the one you stored it in (or you won't be able to delete that folder to get the space back)...probably c:/programme files/garmin

Then you can go back to the original folder if that was on the laptop and delete it......or just remove the external device.

TBH if you have the space, it's not a bad idea to leave the original folder there so you can do it again if it ever becomes necessary- on one of my external drives for example I had a folder with all my installation disks for everything important- all the major progs I use as well as an image of a fresh clean windows installation, so I can just use Acronis True Image (with which the image was created) to reinstall windows, office, dreamweaver, photoshop and all the rest in 15 mins flat rather than the two days of farting around that it would otherwise take :)

HTH

buy a cheap external CD drive and it goes straight on no problem, also useful for anyother software - works for me and my NC10 works well with Mapsource when I'm away. The battery life is great too - 7.5 hours !!

I bought my Son an NC10 for his birthday and it is absolutely fantastic. I have the Asus EEz PC for my bike as it has the flash memory but the NC10 is leagues ahead and has a 160GB drive too.

I have a 16 GB Scandisk Cruzer U3 memory stick and this is a clever memory stick that lets you load your software onto the stick so when you put the U3 memory stick into another pc it has not only your files but your software too.

I am planning to load it up with my Garmin software. Maps etc so I can always download detailed maps to my GSP when on the move along with Google Earth of course:thumb

I am also looking for an external DVD read/wrietr for the NC10 & EEZ PC for films etc can anyone recomend a good reliable one :thumb
