I agree, to an extent. I recently rode Tarka's 1100GS and one of the things I noticed was that it had less "slack" in the transmission. I don't know if the 1200 has "too much", but it certainly has more.
Although when my bike was new the slack was very noticable, after a fuel injection software update it became less so. Obviously the update didn't change the transmission, but it made the engine less snatchy when coming off a closed throttle.
If you peer in through the gearbox oil filler hole, and rotate the rear wheel back and forth, you can see the backlash in action
The 1200RT loan bike I had last week had nothing like the transmission slack of my 05 GS. It was nice and quite at walking pace not the banging you get on the GS The gear change was also alot smoother
There's definitely a lot of slack. I have no idea whether it's 'too much' or even what 'too much' means in this context. Maybe this is the optimal amount of slack
I've seen a lot of problems reported with the electronic and ABS/servos but not the transmission train so maybe the only downside is the clunk and slightly tricky business of making clutchless gear changes smooth. I notice that the manual specifically says dont do clutchless gear changes but I keep forgetting.
With 'too much' i mean that when u close and open the throttle u get a kick and hear a loud klang fom the gearbox. I had a 1100 before, engine was irregular at about 2500-3000 rpm, but transmission was tight. I also ride 80 g/s and 100 gs and they are as smooth as an electric engine.
