I guess this a sort of "Computer" query.

The project

For Children in Need we're looking to do a 24 hour relay at Calshot velodrome (near Southampton). Teams from differing cycling clubs will carry a Pudsey made into a backpack around the track for an hour and then hand him on to the next team etc etc

The problem

Counting laps is the problem. We'd quite like to do this electronically by using a transponder chip inside the Pudsey that triggers a count every time over the line. The only such utilisations of this sort of technology I've seen have been on the back of karts, or on the laces of marathon runners, or the catflap on my back door. ie within 6" of the receiver. I'm looking for something that will operate across the width of the track and at a fair height above the track.

Any thoughts guys'n'gals? :nenau
