Any reasonably priced transport to Nice or there abouts?

My wife & I, on separate bikes wish to do some of the Italian TET, starting near Nice.
So far options of transporting the bikes from Kendal to Nice are circa £800 per bike….. quoted by Chas Mortimer

Does anyone know of an alternative to Chas Mortimer - eg common transport routes to near there or cheaper alternatives?

At circa £1600 we are of a mind to drive out, fly back then start the trip a couple of weeks later in order that we get 2 weeks in the Dolomites & then fly back & collect a couple of weeks later.

Being based in Kendal the journey to Nice is a good few days riding & the initial drive down the UK is always a pain.
The bikes are GS700 & KTM 890 - so not motorway munchers.

Thoughts/ideas welcome.
Thank you.

Edited to put the haulier in and amended the title.

Moved to the French section, as the destination is Nice.

It’ll help if you give bods the name of the haulier that gave you the quote, to save someone (possibly) giving you the same name.

Chas Mortimer is the hauler who’s provided the quote - I did note that another thread indicated he’d become insolvent>?

Thank you. I have edited your opening post.

The haulier’s website is still live….

I guess that, if you have a reasonably up-to-date quote from the haulier, you’ll know if they are recently insolvent or not? Alternatively, contact the haulier to enquire as to whether they are still trading. Be sure to start the enquiry, “My mate says….”

At £800 per bike going that far I don’t think that’s a bad price.

Twin bike trailer and a '2 big days' driving extravaganza? Probably cost c £1200-£1400 in fuel, tolls, an overnight, ferry/tunnel
Riding them out will likely be a similar cost...plus a decent chunk of tyre wear on both bikes.
£1800 for the two bikes plus two flights doesn't seem too bad factoring everything in.

Should be 3 days from there to Nice.

1 day to the chunnel (I'd say mostly direct)
1 day to mid France and a nice dinner (mix of motorway and D roads)
1 day to destination and some more nice food and drinks (mix of motorway and mostly D roads) :D

I shipped bikes before, but 1600gbp + flights is a lot of money. If time is not an issue you can do it cheaper than that and without destroying/squaring up the tyres (so they don't add to the cost).

Trailer seems a good midway.

A bit of a challenge and an expense, if the fellow does not possess a vehicle capable of towing a trailer.

He'll be able to use his LWB Merc Sprinter instead....problem sorted..

Thanks for all input.
We could trail them down - Landy & trailer or Motorhome & trailer however if we are doing that then my reflection, from your prompt, is to try to take longer eg have a week getting there/back & then 2 weeks there to play, is probably the best bet.

With that in mind I’d probably try to get a local bike shop to change our tyres near to Nice. Does anyone know how this can be sourced?
I have used local BMW garage (when in Portugal) however is there a way of finding Nice ‘area’ good motorbike shops that could change the tyres for us? Other than contacting a local KTM or BMW garage?

Thank you for your input - its very much assisted in our reflections.

Tyres are do-able....have a look at the following site.
Click on the tyre of choice and it should allow you to set your location and will then populate a list of garages. I believe that the tyres get delivered to the garage you choose but you'd obviously be able to check that out.

(And Santander to Nice is 100km short of Calais to Nice......1100km v 1200km...it ain't a short run)

Just Google: pneus de moto nice and go from there. It’s Nice, not Walsall.

It’s going a bit off thread, but, Menton is a nicer place to stay, and it’s quite a bit cheaper. Not far from Nice.

Menton - good shout, Ive cycled from there Route d Grande Alps & as you say much more pleasant.

Good idea re the tyres, I’ll have a look at that.

Santander - we’ve done that a few times, both with bikes & trailer but I feel yo loose soooo much time on the boat. OK coming back when your knackered but feels a loss of valuable biking time!

Thank you for the ideas all.

Go east to Hull and ferry to Grottydam, straightline to Nice.

At least you'll miss out the schlepp to Dover, thats what I'm doing whn driving to Spain next year (from Yorkshire)

Bonus, 30% off 2025 crossing black friday deal etc
