Travel Arrangements from England

Travel Plans

Hello fellow swissers.

Norm, I've been looking at your travel ideas, and for me the original option 2 seemed better for me. Travelling on the Wednesday with a stop over, hopefully in Dijon, then arriving in Vevey sometime Thursday pm.

It would be nice to travel together, safety in numbers and all that, but I wouldn't be able to do the 10 hour stint from Zebrugger in one go. Quite simply, my back and arse wouldn't take it.

So I'm now going to get my crisp new map of France out on the floor, and start planning. I'll let you all know what my route is later.

P.S. I'll then put it in my satnav!:D :augie

Thank you for considering our Southern friends here. Strong beer can make you go giddy if you're not used to it, which of course is not an issue for us Northern folk :D

Now all the sorting out has to be done

I will probably catch an early boat from calais and hopefully get to vevey late afternoon ,so if anyone else is planning on perhaps doing the same, meeting up somewhere will be the easy bit [ THIS SIDE OF THE WATER ANYWAY] :thumb2

Nowt wrong wiit Shandy.

Anyhow, Charlyfarly...not a million miles from you, but I'll probably take the slow boat and stop over at Dijon, maybe catching hold of the Northern Posse as they mosey through.

Still looking at maps, satnav, Google Earth, etc., and they all seem to go through Dijon to get to the Alps.

Still, I'm keen as mustard. Groan.

I'll get me coat.

I like the idea of the Hull/Zeebrugge crossing - did it last year and its so much easier than the long slog down to Dover. Cheaper as well if you share a cabin.
I prefer the holiday to begin from the moment I press the starter so Im going for the Tues evening boat out and a stop over somewhere en-route (might throw in a bit of camping gear and leave it at Vevey hotel for return trip)
Dijon sounds good. Anyone from hup norf fancy this option?

Greetings

I've just had a look at the ferry times to St Malo.

I'm going to have to get the 1645 sailing from Guernsey on Wednesday 9th getting in at 1930 local.

I'll then stay somewhere like Rennes probably and give me all day on Thursday 10 to get to Vevey.

My route will be something like this :

So hopefully meet up with some of you on the way.

Then on the return I will have to get the 1145 sailing on Sunday 20th,which means I'll have all day on the Saturday to get most of the way back.

So I'll be looking at both the nights of 10 and 18th in Vevey.

The Negociants place looks fine.

Arsey - might try and meet up with you around the Dijon area? Bit early for my planning (been a bit busy) but like the sound of it.

I'll be coming from Calais - much cheaper option for me from Dover - and staying in/near Dijon on the Wednesday night.

Maybe we could meet up with the Northern contingent when they mosey down from Zebrugge??

Anyhow, I'm up for anything.

Apparently...:augie

I prefer the option of a more local (to me) crossing to France rather than ride East to Folkestone,I'm looking at Brittany ferries crossing from Portsmouth to St Malo which is an overnight crossing getting in to St Malo at 08.15 on Friday 10th if anybody else is up for this we could split the cost of a cabin?
Return crossing departs St Malo at 10.30 on Sunday 20th so I too would be looking at the evenings of the 10th and 18th at Vevey.

Hi Humvee,

I might be interested in this option, but I think you mean arrive St Malo on Thursday 10th. I hope so, only I'm sure I wouldn't be able to keep up. St Malo - Vevey in 45 minutes:eek:

youll be running a day behind with that sailing , thats unless you know of a short cut to Vevey..

:blast

just looked again, sems that you have the day and date mixed up,

Hmmm.........alcohol and pooters-not a good mix is it ;)

I did of course mean a Wednesday overnight crossing for a Thursday morning arrival in St.Malo, leel600 it might be an idea to see if anyone else is up for this before booking a crossing with cabin :thumb2

No problem :thumb2

I'm going down to Portsmouth on 1st May, for a crossing to Cherbourg. So will have Idea of route down and trave time.

Cheers.

Lee.

Living in Middle England means I'm fairly spoilt for choice of Departure Port, in that they're all fecking miles away from me!:augie

Brittany Ferries (to St Malo) is a good choice - comfortable, clean bunks, good entertainment and food), but they insist on tying down your bikes. Not a problem, but insist on extra cushions if you want them, as some of the guys will just throw a strop over the saddle and miss the cushion(s) completely, then proceed to tighten the strop with the buckle against plastic or metal bodywork

I'd willingly share a cabin, but I really do snore like a bastid. May even be better for me to be on a separate boat...

I like the sound of a £35 return from Dover to Calais, than the over-£100 to St Malo. That makes me sound like a tightwad (I am), but I travel to France at least 4 or 5 times a year, so it makes economic sense for me.

Still planning and thinking...

If you boys do that I could hang around in St Malo and ride down with you.

I'll be in on Weds pm and would have set off a tad earlier on Thursday morning.

Magnum,

Are we staying near any avalanche areas?
No. The only member of the group that is staying in avalanche areas is Yoy. I haven't told him yet, but the plan is to get him leathered each night and just wheel him up there :D
