TRAVEL IN US AND CANADA 2005

Hi All,

I hope someone can help me with some info regarding bike insurance in North America.

Iwas hoping to ship my BMW R1150R Grinnall Trike to the US next March and tour the US and Canada for about three to four months and then ship the trike back to the UK.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to find anybody in the UK who is prepared to insure me on the trike. Part of the problem, I think, is that I have a disability ( right arm Bracial Plexus Lesion ). Even the amazing Dave Grist at H C Travel has been unable to help, as have BMW GB and my own insurance providers ( Bikesure ).

Could anybody out there help with any sugestions and/or advice on how I could make this dream come true ?

To my knowledge, there are only 2 bike insurers who will touch a Brit registered bike, ridden by a Brit, in the USA. Both of these are the ones that H C Travel deal with. It's a very expensive business, even with a standard bike...

David Grist is, in my experience, a very 'can-do' chap - if neither of these companies have been able to help him with your problem, I'm afraid I'm unable to suggest who might...

Thanks for the reply MikeO. Appreciate you taking the time. Unfortunately, I think that you are spot on. It,s VERY VERY VERY dissapointing but not unexpected. I will keep trying anyway - you never know.

Out of interest, how have you got round that problem?

I believe your best bet and from my previous experience of insuring an RV whilst travelling around the States and Canada is to insure over there. You will need an address over there you can give the insurers. I used family we have in New York.
Do you have and family or friends you could use as a base and postal address?

Good suggestion. I've got relatives in Calgary, Canada. I might try them although I've not seen them in a long time !

I have my a American bike insured by Progressive. Do a search for their website and ask them the question. I found them very useful and very inexpensive compared to UK insurers.

Might also be worth dropping an email to Nick Sanders because he includes 3rd party insurance for his trips to Alaska/Canada etc.

Worth a try, but the snag is that the bike will be UK registered - as a Brit, I could get insurance anywhere for a US registered bike, but a Brit riding a Brit bike is a completely different matter (although why this should be, no-one could explain...)...

Mike, Progressive didn't ask me where the bike is registered, just wanted the chassis number.

I got a discount for being a homeowner (in the UK) and a discount for having an Arizona driving (car) licence. $125 per year

Shooter - certainly seems worth a try with Progressive. They can only say no ! Also, if anyone should know about obtaining insurance abroad, it's Nick Sanders. As you suggest, I'll drop him a line.

A update on the US insurance debacle !

Contacted Nick Sanders as suggested. A very helpful chap ! He advised that I contact www.motorcycleexpress.com and speak to Gail. This I did and Gail turned out to be very helpful. She confirmed that they are not taking on any business at the moment, BUT, she could see no reason why they would not insure me for the US next year ! RESULT !
All I have to do is contact the great Dave Grist at H C Travel after Christmas and everything should be OK.

Once again chaps, many many thanks for your advice and suggestions. It pays to keep plugging away !!!!

I'm perplexed as to why David didn't point you at Motorcycle Express in the first place - they are one of the two brokers I originally referred to. They are insuring me, arranged via HC Travel - I assumed that he'd already sent you there and they'd said no...

In defense of Dave Grist, I think there has been a bit of miss-communication. Gail at Motorcycleexpress did say that they were not taking on any further insurance business at the moment, BUT, she had only just been told that it was highly likely that she could insure me after Christmas. I don't think Dave was aware of this development.
I have since PM'd him and he has confirmed that he will get back to me after Christmas.
So, hopefully, alls well that ends well !!!!!!!!
