Has anyone driven through the former Yugoslavia in recent times. I was thinking of driving directly to Turkey and not using the ferry from Italy to Greece. My Zumo tells me its 3990 km from where I live to where I will be going directly and more if I go via Greece and use the ferry.

Anyones help would be appreciaeted.

Hi there Trooper

We rode through Turkey last year, and returned home through Greece, Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Croation, Bosnia Slovenija, Austria etc.

Had to pay 60 dollars for insurance into Macedonia, if you've got a green card make sure it covers you. We were away so long and didn't have a green card and so had to pay

20 dollars insurance at the border into Kosovo, otherwise a great ride, magnificent scenery and no problems. The coast roads are very busy and touristy, inland much quieter.

Enjoy....

Hi Trooper,

all exYu countries are safe to travel, I'm not sure about Kosovo, but as you see Micky has been there without problems. There can be minor annoyances like corrupt police officers demanding small bribes (especially in Bosnia).

As you see I'm Croatian, and have many friends in all exYu countries so feel free to ask if you want to know some specific stuff.

Hi,

Came back from Jordan and Turkey last year. The route out went through Italy/Greece and ferry. Italy was a straight bomb down the autostrada but northern Greece was great. Came back through Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia (with a brief detour into Poland), Czech Republic, Germany and Holland.
No hassles anywhere and Green Card covered everything, including Turkey (but insurance company made a mistake in agreeing to this but honoured their quote).
Best places - Greece:thumb , Turkey:thumb :thumb , Romania:thumb :thumb and Slovakia (particularly Tatras):thumb .
Have a great trip.

Did this last year (click on my 'sig' link for haphazard details) and had no problems travelling through that area.

You will, however, find it nigh on impossible to get insurance for Serbia form any UK based insurers. It can be bought at the border crossing but IMHO it's a worthless bit of paper, not convinced it would cover you for anything if worst happened. My solution was to be a bit 'creative' with my green card. PM me if you have any problems. It would be a shame to miss Serbia as this was my favourite country that I passed through.

Turkey can be tricky to get insurance for but if you are with one of the bigger companys you shouldn't have a problem. However, diving standards in Turkey are another thing............... ;)

Whatever, don't stres too much about travelling through Eastern Europe, I did and it really wasn't nesercery - it was very straight forward and I for one can't wait to go back :)
