I want a trickle charger I can plug straight into my F800GS`s power socket. Any ideas?

An Optimate will do you, but wire a connector direct to the battery - if you try to charge the battery via the power socket the CanBus will say nonono - unless you have the UberSpetiale BMW charger ...

What he sez! :D

Cheers Guys I think I`ll hold out for a BMW charger, it sounds easier for a lazy sod like me.

That's a fair price, but I'll kindly refrain as we (me and CrazyCaz) tend to ride our bikes once in a while keeping the battery topped up. A BMW trickle charger would be a "nice to have" for us, not a necessity. :) I'm sure it'll find a good home. :) Cheers.

Gomez has treated me to a BMW trickle charger for my F800....all plugged in and keeping warm for the winter now:D

Mines like Pumas only it has a bespoke bracket (read a piece of wood) to straddle the saddle as I didnt want it falling off and damaging the charger.

Given the temps we have at present I see my £50 as an investment Im sure you can sell it again in the future and in the meantime it keeps the battery charged and in good shape http://www.ukgser.com/forums/images/smilies/motomartin.gif

Optimate connected directly or not

Hello everybody,
I got bit confused from two posts. One saying Optimate+BMW plug adaptor will do the job (I assume just plug&pray) and another post says that the Optimate should be connected directly to the batery otherwise the CanBus wil say nonono.
Could some of the wiser tossers explain himself and teach me a lesson so I can understand what is thew most appropriate action? My riders manual says that unsuitable charger or connecting the charger wrong way can damage the bike's electronics.

Me too, as well, the same, also

Hello everybody,
I got bit confused from two posts. One saying...

As usual, one question, twelve answers, all of them right.

I went straight to the horses mouth (also known as Clarks Motorcycles) and was told catagorically that it might work..... and it might not. I give up :blast

I will try my optimate and see what happens as he did say that it would definitely not damage the bike, if anything it simply wouldn't work as optimate would not send the signal which the BMW charger sends to open the socket

Suck it and see

One point he mentioned is that the dashboard socket cuts out at around 5amps so I am going to fit an aux socket straight off the battery with an inline fuse to charge and run my Gerbings kit from

This is the best solution - no canbus compatibility problems.

The black plastic bit that contains the existing socket already has a hole underneath on the other side. Drill through the top and you have an ideal location for a direct fused socket.

When connecting to the battery, do one terminal at a time. Hold the main connector tight to the battery with a screwdriver, undo the nut, put on new connector and redo nut. This way you don't lose service data.

This is a great solution (and just happens to be what I did also... *koff-koff*) cos if you have a battery charger with a 12v plug on the end, it'll go straight into the socket and thence to the battery so no need for any pig-tail sockets for an optimate...

- Optimate 4 Dual Program works fine with CanBus bikes.
- Optimate 4 (older type) does not and has to be connected straight to the battery.
