Please post your views on the 1200GS below rather than making one line responses to technical queries . I'm sure we're all interested in what you have to say ;)

gsmonkey....must be painful reading all the problems your type of bike has and then thinking about all the cash you handed over. Says a lot about you how you think theres nothing wrong. I think you need to chat with Tricky.

To be honest, probably not (famous last words!). The reason is not so much the bike itself, but the manufacturer. The reliability and build quality issues which are well documented on this site bug me - particularly for what is such an expensive bike - but what worries me is BM's complete denial of these problems. To me they are not playing the game. The marketing philosophy BM want us to buy into with the 12GS is go anywhere, rough 'n tough bikers bike etc etc and yet the reality is that the bikes have and do fail and have 'questionable' build quality, but BM seem to be refusing to acknowledge any of these problems (final drives failing? ABS etc failing?) - which is at odds with the whole GS philosophy. At least we all got our rusty fork braces and lowers replaced no questions asked when we had 11xx's! Ducati 999 going wrong the whole time, maybe - 1200GS, no! Have they learned nothing?!

I have to agree with Tricolourforever on this. It is the best bike in the world when running well but, when things go wrong, BMW really don't handle it well, either on the breakdown/recovery side nor the provision of a courtesy bike - unless the dealer has a spare bike available.

My GS was at the dealer, having been recovered twice in May and in June, for 8 days and 6 days respectively. The offer of a car for 48 hrs on each occasion was derisory - plus I've got a car, it's a bike that I want.

The bike is sorted now but to send out a Emergency Technician on both occasions and both times they were car experts with no knowledge of bikes, which they quite freely admitted to me, was purely adding insult to the misery of being stranded roadside.

Each time the bike showed a red warning symbol only and the breakdown side argued with the Service Department at Blue Bell Crewe over whether or not the bike was safe to ride. The dealer said not to ride with a red warning light and BMW said risk it - until I asked for a name.

Sorry but the words piss up and brewery spring to mind at BMW.

I like this bike a lot ,ride it every chance i get & so far no a single problem . They have sold more 1200 gs bmw's than any other bmw before it by a long way .mine is an 05 with 3000 mile on it so far & off to scotland next month i am putting mile on mile to this bike & last year did 1500 mile on my old bike in 12 months.
I work on bike's for a living so see a lot of faults & niggles from all makes . one thing i have noticed & that is i see more bad owners than bikes :D .

You may well be right but there are bikes both and off this forum that are breaking down or having problems, through no fault of the owner.

BMW should acknowledge the fact and gear themselves up to dealing with these matters as and when they happen.

I honestly think that their 'Customer Care' has deteriorated in recent years and you'd expect better of a prestige manufacturer.

Must admit this is my first bmw & pibcocks have been very very good even got me a second key so i have no grounds to complain :D

Blue Bell Crewe have been good with me too - it's BMW themselves that I am unimpressed with.
