Trike crash helmet rules/laws?

Hi Folks, I think one of you (Proff) will know the answer to this....
What is the rules or laws on wearing a crash helmet on trikes?
I see some folk wearing them and some not....
Yesterday I clocked a bloke on a Goldwing Trike on the M56, no lid.

I thought it was that if the vehicle has a reverse gear, there is no requirement to wear a lid.

Reverse gear has nowt to do with it...it is mainly down to the weight !!

I've had a few...tended not to wear a lid locally but for any distance I always wore a lid ( feckin' cold without a lid as well )
