Have been meaning to do a write up about my recent trip to see my number two son Chris aka Crippy Pastrami whose a snowboarding dude amongst other things who lives in chamonix but never got round to it, but with a wet Sunday on, well here goes...............

Got the green light from Lorna for a two week jaunt so got the 'baron' loaded up, booked a seat only on the Rosslare ferry at a reduced rate and headed south. Before boarding, bought a cooked chicken and a few large Heiniken beers to keep me company. Once on board, went to reception and got a bed for 20 euros. I ended up sharing a 4 berth cabin with Jermery who was a french biker who had just done a lap of ireland and was heading home. I shared some chicken and beer with him and we had some craic. He couldn't understand the term 'pishing down' as in weather but we got on handsomely.

On arrival at Cherbourg I decided to bomb down to Limoges as I had booked into Moto Breaks. The first 100 or so miles on the auto route then the remainder on back roads. Fanastic weather and scenery. Got down to MotoBreaks at about 6ish and was greeted by Chris and wined and dined like royality. Chris and paddy have some operation going down here and I couldn't recommend them highly enough. It didn't break the bank. will definately be calling back in the future...

Left Moto Breaks and headed to Oradour Sur Glane which is just down the road. Arrived early in the morning, must have been the first as I had the place to myself for a hour or so. The staff will lock away your kit free of charge so you're not lumbered with helmets etc. Took a few pics and it's a fairly daunting place with a sombre history. let's hope there's never a repeat.

Left Oradour and headed east to see Crippy. I plotted the route to chamonix by the back roads with the intention of camping along the road but with having just visited Oradour I just wanted to see Crippy asap, so gritted my buttocks and saw number two son at 7.20 pm that evening having passed by beautiful scenery.

Dinner beckons more to follow.

:aidan

Touched down in Cham and met up with Crippy, Roach Pastrami and Crippys eye candy Victoria. It was nice seeing them all....

Unfortunately Crippy had to work so using his pad as base tootled around. Heard
there was dinosaurs in the region so headed off looking 'em......

On the way to Martigney, met up with three harley fellas at a bar tent. Had a wee drink with them and the craic was good. Apparantly there was a big Harley meet somewhere in the locality and there was literally 100s of Harleys crusing about in groups of 20/30. see one hog seen them all.

Decided to take in a few passes and started with the Simplon Pass......

Hope you didn't eat a bag of dried apricots before entering the tunnel?
Or maybe you learned your lesson ;)

:aidan

Yep David. No apricots this time or ring of fire. I'd learnt my lesson.

Anyhow, looked at the map and headed to St Gotthards pass via the Bedretto
Road. It looked good on the map, was better in the flesh but a tad cold. Lots of twisties..................took a few pics.

at the top of Nufenen Pass. Not a lot there but a gift shop and cafe which served nice coffee. No beer this time.

Went on to Gotthard Pass.....

I saw this road as I was heading up and stopped and met 4 German dudes, one took a pic of me. He was a bit of a commedian and asked me to step back. I was about to do it and looked behind me, there was one hell of a drop. Smart boy.

4836922133_932d41df04_b.jpg

This road had been featured on UKGSER by means of a video. It is cobbled stone and i always wanted to ride it.

4837531354_b0c5f7fda7_b.jpg

4837532536_73a8616dd0_b.jpg

Got the top of the pass where there was an invasion of Harleys. The 'baron' was feeling intimidated. Dandered around had a burger of sorts and saw a cobbled road. This was it. Went on it, It's about 6 km long. Never met a car or pedestrian and the weather was great. It exited in some sort of military camp. Turned the 'baron' round and rode up. Again, not a sinner about. It felt I had the mountain to myself. Time to fine a place to put my head down. To hell with roughing it. Let's hit the plastic.

More to follow.................

It`s two or three years since I last hit those passes,so you`ve now got my wanderlust in top gear via your ace photos. :thumb2

Ouradour is a very sobering experience isn`t it ??
I didn`t feel as if I should take any photos when Glambabe and I visited it, and it left us both left feeling rather numb and speechless for a while afterwards. :(

I really like the photo of the KTM and your BMW.

Looking forwards to more of your report. :thumb2

After leaving Gotthard Pass, got into Andermatt. Nice little town with narrow streets.

4835395312_897d918924_b.jpg

Book into an hotel (one in picture) and was given the top floor to myself. Was this a suttle hint that I stank:augie. anyhow, got out of my gear, washed up and hit the bright lights of Andermatt. feeling a tad thirsty I saw this sort of shop that sold beer and food, and round the corner a seating area with tables. Look good to me and within my budget. Spoke to the owner and she understood that I wanted a big beer. When I saw the beer, I thought, yep thats big so I'll have another to keep it company. Everything was going smoothly until i asked for some food. No food, they where closing. Hmmmm, time for plan B. I explained to her that I was a lost soul from Ireland and I hadn't eaten for days. She liked the craic and told me to go outside to the tables and she would bring some grub out. Went outside clutching my two big beers and who should be there but the 4 german dudes...

4836923353_43f9146c77_b.jpg

They had asked for more beer but had been refused, when they saw me and my beverages the craic really got going. The owner came out with quite a tasty meal and with my Orish charm, beer began to flow and we were all happy and content. After more beer the dudes (they were peelers) left to clean up (or throw up). I slauntered round the town and could hear the magical sound of an alpine horn so puting on my Steven Spilberg hat located to horn blowers up a mountain side. A wee video of horn blowing.

Amazing Grace was a bit weird, hearing it in swizterland. Usually you hear with bagpipes and yer maun Mccartney.

mt9dyS-VwW0

did you like the wink.

It was really quite nice listen to the horn through the silence of the evening.

Went back into town, for a bit of craic and met up with the Swiss National Service. Some of them had seen me earlier that day when i rode into their barracks which was at the bottom of the cobbled road. They can't drink.
Met up with German dudes and met this guy perched on a wall playing his pipe as I was heading by to my pit.........

Headed towards the Furka Pass. The weather was really warm and there
was little traffic.

It was quite warm despite some snow/ice by the road side.

5017813970_47659faac2_b.jpg

Stopped off at this watering hole and just watched the 'beautiful people' come and go.

4159969445_870ddbb734_b.jpg

Headed back to Cham along some back roads, missing out the autoroute. Some really nice scenery and, stopping and starting was getting on my hind tit a bit. Took a final pic of Martigney and a cool beer at the cafe close by.

more to follow.

:aidan

Spent the next days chilling out with the son, sitting in road side cafes watching

the world go by and jumping in and out of the lake at Passy. The temp was in

mid thirties. Took a run down to Annessy, but it was tooooo crowded.

4835431148_7bd357187f_b.jpg

There were some nice bods in the water along the lake side but I'll keep those

in my imagination. Headed back to Cham on the D909/12 and onto the D1212

Nice roads, with great scenery and perty villages. Time to say goodbye to

Crippy so we had a bit of a sing along...

4836912829_dc6ffe094f_z.jpg

and headed back to Cherbourg via the back roads. Planned three days

for this. I headed along the top of the Loire, having stocked up with a few

beverages and found a nice spot by the river. 'NO CAMPING' a sign said or

something similar. Anyway I can't read French and it was too hot to go on.

there was also a bit of a BBQ going on in a near by farm. Joined in the craic

with them and retired. Too hot in the tent, slept on the table.....

4832134342_38e9c8cf3d_b.jpg

Next day headed on into Bourge and did the touristy thing and visited the

Cathedral and cafes where I dined out on a few plates of mussels and chips

with a liberal side of red wine. What I remember of Bourge was the flights of

swifts flying about all twitering away.

I love these buildings and the architecture and detail in them.

Stayed in a cafe/pub/hostel in the centre of Bourge. Wasn't great.

Next stop the Normandy beaches.

More to follow...............

I've just had the horn playing as a background to reading the latest parts of the report.

Very evocative.....

Touched down on the Normandy coast line. Have always wanted to see the

'beaches' having watched the Longest Day and Shaving Ryans Privates, as well

as my late father having waded ashore in those dark days. A few pics....

Pegasus Bidge.

Where the three 'stones' are, ........

4834993287_3013cf1329_b.jpg

they were able to land 3 of these in a 45 square metre area at night with

only a compass and clock. No GPS inthose days....

4832027938_26495c0b0c_b.jpg

The museum, which is close by is worth a visit as is the cafe at the bridge,

which served nice coffee.

4835631292_fe19ab45c9_b.jpg

The 'baron', fully loaded....., you will note the flask on the bike, when I got

back, it had gone !!!!!

4835634130_d6fe61bb19_b.jpg

Headed westwards and found this delightful watering hole which served up

really nice mussels/chips and beer.

4832091720_e3c7bbc170_b.jpg

Stayed the night - 35 Euros. Very clean.

on this neat BM

5017819094_0c9960d891_b.jpg

Bimbled up to Cherbourg and had my final French meal in a wee pub called
Le 1800. It's close to Rue Jean Bapiste. Very tasty. Hopped on board the ferry and headed home.
Loved the roads, the scenery, the craic and above all seeing Crippy Pastrami.
Roll on 2011.
