Trip to Croatia

I'll say it again .. I love this forum. Every day I pop in to have a look. This chap is simply asking for a bit of a heads up to Croatia. It is, as others have said " a bit open / what do you actually want ? " etc. Now within a short period you lot have put up plans and routes and suggestions etc .. all for the love of biking and helping others ! Well done you lot who have done all that. Good effort. I find this sort of shit very rewarding to see and read. :beerjug::beerjug: Well done. That's all.

Here you go. A fully planned 13 day (so you have a day spare) trip, Calais > Croatia > Calais.

Have a look at post #34 in this thread:

https://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php/525330-Croatia-bound/page3?highlight=Croatia

There the fellow sets out his intended 15 day holiday route. You could put the destinations into Google maps (or similar) sequentially as one route and see if something like it suits you. Then play around, creating something for yourself.

Or see post #19 of this thread:

On the subject of the link in post #19 referred to in the post above.

I downloaded all the routes, which are well created. I noticed that the numbering of the individual days was a bit adrift, with days apparently missing. I then joined all the routes together, sequentially and could see that there was no gaps. I guessed, and the owner of the routes has kindly confirmed, that the ‘missing’ days were probably nothing more than rest days, off the bike.

There are, to some at least, going to be some big mileages in the bunch. So take a bit of care before you maybe blithely load them into your trusted GPS device at 11:30 and expect to be at the next hotel, showered and sipping cocktails by the pool by 15:30.

I’ll cut the routes into MyRoute and embed them into this thread, which will make them easy to see.

All of the routes referred to above.

Note:

A. I have (I hope) renumbered them correctly and consecutively.

B. As they stand, they allow no days off.

C. The routes display well. But, if you see something odd, it might well be because the map / software you are using is rerouting the route to cater for seasonal closures. For instance, on one of the days, the route crosses the Stelvio pass, which is currently closed. MyRoute’s default map for ‘Gold’ users is HERE, so it does its best to route you around any known road closures, but still join the shaping points up. This can create bizarre routing, but that’s life, Jim. Turning off seasonal closures, cures this problem.

D. Tap around, I don’t think you can break it.

E. It would be easy to amend the routes, to make them more direct, if that suited anyone’s plans.

My thanks to Malcopopolo for sharing them originally.

If the OP looks at Malcopopolo’s holiday, he can see some features which he might well be able to adapt.

1. The outward journey is broken up into seven individual stages, arguably too long for the OP. But:

a. It does go all the way from Calais to Dubrovnik, right at the southern tip of Croatia

b. It’s maybe longer (distance and time wise) than it needs to be, as Malcopopolo wanted to travel through some specific places. For example, he includes the iconic Stelvio pass. He also favours a non-motorway route. That’s fine, it was after all Malcopopolo’s holiday, he can do whatever he likes

2. The return journey up from Dubrovnik to Calais, is broken up into five individual stages, two less than the outward leg. It takes a different direction up through Croatia, than that taken downwards. The five day spread arguably suits the OP better.

3. The individual distances are quite long, but:

a. The OP doesn’t have to copy them exactly

b. He could, with not a lot of effort, amend the individual stages to better suit his itinerary. For example, he could miss out the Stelvio pass or drop in some motorway, replacing the non-motorway roads taken by Malcopopolo

c. He maybe doesn’t need to go all the way down to Dubrovnik. He could go to other places in Croatia; in other words he’ll need a map, in order to plan his own holiday. For example, if he stayed in the north of Croatia, he could maybe consider parts of this:

Or

The key thing is that the bones of the journey Calais > Croatia > Calais, have been done for him or, indeed, anyone else who wants to make the same journey. Instant (or nearly instant) holidays from the pages of UKGSer….. all for the price of a subscription to the forum.
