I have been thinking of planning a trip to Nordkapp (Northcape) in Norway for a while.

Planning on going in June/July.

I understand that they have a mid-summer festival there.

Has anyone been to this festival?

I am considering a crossing to Gothenburg, and then riding up the west coast of Norway, via Trondheim, up to Nordkapp.

Return journey back to Gothenburg would either be on the eastern coast of Sweden, following the Gulf of Bothnia (Baltic Sea) via Stockholm, or the East coast of Finland, catching a ferry back from Turku to somewhere in Sweden.

Has anyone done this before?
Can anyone give me any hints and tips on what or what not to do? What to see/miss?

Anyone interested in doing the same?

Anyone going there anyway, and looking for company?

Hi Beaky
I went last July and had a great time (missed the festival though). Some might disagree with me but I traveled from Kristiansand (The ferry gets there early in the morning so you have a full days riding..the ferry gets into Gothenberg about tea time) and I rode up through the Sognesfjiord region (Odda, Bruravik, Voss, Vik) then meeting the E6 at Otta.
I then used the E6 all the way up to Nordkapp.
This part of the trip was fantastic with brilliant scenery.

I then travelled back down through Finland and Sweden on the 45 to Stockholm and then across to Gothenberg.

This part was a mistake..it was boring after Norway.

If (when) I do it again I`ll go up the West coast to the Lofoten islands and I might carry on to Kirkenes and get the ferry back to Bergen which, I`m told , sails past breathtakingly beautifull scenery.

Hope this helps...pm me if you want more info..accomodation etc.

I used campsites mostly though I dont camp (except on a boys night out). I used the self catering cabins which range from £15 a night for basic to £40 a night with showers/toilet.
Stayed in a nice hotel in Voss which was reasonably priced due to it being out of season..it was a ski lodge.
I cant remember exactly how much the fuel was but it was cheaper than the UK.

Beaky,

Sounds like my kind of trip, look forward to seeing posting of more details, dates, envisaged mileage, ferry cost etc. I generally camp but quite happy to use any other reasonbly priced accomodation.

But dates/duration are important to see if I can escape the workhouse (Oh! and the office)

captain beaky,

For your trip up the west coast of Norway.........which is the way I went, look at www.rv17.no which will give you ideas for that leg of your journey.

If you want to make it really special get on the ferry over the lofoten islands and ride from A to Andennes.......look at the map, basically ride the length of them, and you can go whale watching in Andennes, well worth it.

Camping was around £10 a night, although if its chucking it down rent a Hytte or garden shed. Can be a bit pricey, but I shared with other bikers in the same predicament ....and didnt get murdered.

Loads of petrol stations so don't worry.

Check out www.nordkappmcklubb.com their bike festival is in July, all dets on the site.

Have good waterproofs..........the beemer oversuit kept me dry in some piss poor weather.

Carry a telescopi fishing rod, loads of fishing opportunities, I often caught my dinner.

If you want dinner on the cheap, buy tins of lapskaus.....stew in the supermarket.

I rode back via Finland, turku to stockholm then back to bergen and then Newcastle.

Any more questions just ask.

Starting in Kristianssand, and then travelling north through the Setesdalen is a good start I think!
Compared the the more "logical" route over the E6 from Oslo to
Trondheim, this route to the north takes you to a much more interesting part of southern Norway.
But as you say riding through Sweden (45) is boring after having seen Norway.
But if you only have two weeks, I would take that fast route
north as far as possible and thus create extra time
for the trip south through Norway, leaving the IMHO too crowded E6 as much as possible.
The ferry you mention is called the Hurtigruten

For this summer I'm going to try another route north, through the Baltic States and Finland, meeting my sister (80G/S PD) and friend (1100RS) on one of the following rallies in the north of Norway on 18-20 july:

- Lofoten MC-Treff, Gravdal i Nordland
- Polartreffet, Alta i Finnmark
- Run To The Artic Fun, Storfjord i Troms
