Triple ...........

This is looking so good and I'm genuinely impressed with the quality of work going into the build :)

It's also, the first 'modern' Triumph triple I've seen that I'd really like to own. Looking forward to seeing more!

I'll have a slot available for another build once this one is finished ;)

Details .... details .... details ......

Now all the big bits are in place it's time to finish up all the small bits ........ It's a bit tedious, it's time consuming but it's absolutely essential. This is where the devil is in the detail, cutting corners here will negate all the hard work you put in on the big statement items such as the tank and wheels!
Some parts are finished, some still need finishing .........

The cooling system is now fully installed and the coils are mounted and HT leads in place.

So on to the rear 'fender'
The fender fitted to this bike is actually the redundant item from the front. It was too narrow to fit to the rear as it was so needed to be modified. Now I'd love to say that I'd done the welding but unfortunately my welding plant isn't good enough to have the kind of fine control needed to do such a delicate job, so I asked my mate Pat (who's a bit handy with a welder and sheet metal to run a 20mm strip through the centre.

Filled and primed ....

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/29879887@N02/13874238055" title="IMG_6237 by tunneruk, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7448/13874238055_c96f71591e_b.jpg" width="768" height="1024" alt="IMG_6237"></a>

So it was time to think about mounting it!
Earlier in the thread I mentioned that I'd pre-drilled the swing arm prior to painting to facilitate the fitment of the rear fender. Now's the time to make use of those holes ....

I formed a curved piece of 6mm flat bar to match the curvature of the mudguard

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/29879887@N02/13874361445" title="IMG_6316 by tunneruk, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5552/13874361445_d0de70f71f_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="IMG_6316"></a>

then put an 80 degree bend to return it under the swing arm to meet my previously drilled mounting holes ..

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/29879887@N02/13874745634" title="IMG_6327 by tunneruk, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7365/13874745634_479d5fff67_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="IMG_6327"></a>

And on the fender sits .......

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/29879887@N02/13874345685" title="IMG_6326 by tunneruk, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3831/13874345685_8da563065f_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="IMG_6326"></a>

Next up .. finish the handlebars :hide

There will be absolutely minimal switchgear on the bike, I'm fitting nothing more than two buttons to the bars, one for the horn and one for the starter. Rather than use something with a nasty bracket I decided to fit micro push buttons into the bars.

I have now blasted the bars and painted them in the new colour (but not taken a photo yet .........)

The rear subframe is from a Triumph Thunderbird, it's a much nicer shape than the TT legend one and with a bit of modification should look very nice. It'll be de-lugged and narrowed by 20mm.
Everything with masking tape around it is to be removed!
In addition to this, the tank mount is to be lowered by 15mm to give the tank a slightly lower stance.

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/29879887@N02/13874478003" title="IMG_6242 by tunneruk, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7408/13874478003_23e5990ac4_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="IMG_6242"></a>

I was sure I'd taken a photo but it appears not. Surfice to say that it's now all de-lugged and narrowed, just needs some final fettling before I start painting it .......

The bike is having a new 3-1stainless system with a Supertrapp 'silencer'
The 3-1 comes with a tail pipe which is designed to be cut to suit, I'd originally just slipped it on but it was now time to cut it about to it's final position .. this was how it looked originally ....

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/29879887@N02/13410153604" title="IMG_6152 by tunneruk, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3700/13410153604_6fb56d9797_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="IMG_6152"></a>

Paul is after a shot and stubby look so a lot of the pipe will be removed. Because the can will essentially 'hang' off the back of the pipe it needed some kind of support.
I made up a small stainless bracket which was TIG'd to the rear pipe and bolted up to a sump mounting bolt.

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/29879887@N02/13874718074" title="IMG_6386 by tunneruk, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2821/13874718074_10680e1592_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="IMG_6386"></a>

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/29879887@N02/13874377353" title="IMG_6383 by tunneruk, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2868/13874377353_383e290d34_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="IMG_6383"></a>

The Supertrapp silencer itself is designed for off road type bikes. This choice is through necessity due to the bore of the exhaust pipe. The trouble is that the finish isn't very 'custom like' It comes out of the box with a (rather poorly applied) coat of matt black paint. This is not acceptable so I stripped the silencer down, stripped the paint off the parts, brushed the steel finish and clear coated them with a 2k matt lacquer. I have to say that the end result is very very pleasing!

I've made a bespoke seat for this bike, it's designed to just cover the top rails of the subframe.

Will the rear mudguard be welded to the mounting bracket? Will you need to chamfer the end of the bracket to avoid catching the tyre tread if vibration means they come together?

A brilliant clean looking mounting!

Will the rear mudguard be welded to the mounting bracket? Will you need to chamfer the end of the bracket to avoid catching the tyre tread if vibration means they come together?

A brilliant clean looking mounting!

The bracket bolts to the lower swing arm, the fender bolts to the bracket and it 'hovers' over the rear wheel. I have also made a couple of small billet braces which mount to the top of the swing arm, which triangulate up to about a third of the way up the the fender (these will be in the next update)
If you look carefully at the pics of the bike on the ramp you can just make them out. I'll be painting them tomorrow. I'll take some photographs!
My plan is to have the rest of the bracketry and the rear fender painted by the end of play tomorrow then leave them hanging up over easter and crack in to building the bike up next week. If all goes to plan I am going to finish putting her together, build the wiring loom and possibly fire her up by Friday ;)

Before I continue I would like to apologise for the profuse use of the words "Naturally" and "Essentially"
I've just read this thread through from the beginning and I've realised that I use them a LOT!

Anyway ..... an update .....

After much cutting, grinding, filing, filling, sanding and generally cocking about, the subframe is now finished. Its been narrowed by 20mm to give a cleaner profile for the seat and the mount for the tank lowered by 15mm. These are all subtle changes which pretty much go unnoticed in isolation but all go towards creating a new look for the bike..

I'm on the home straight now, just got the wiring loom to build, fill it with all it's fluids and bleed the brakes / clutch, button up a few other jobs and she'll be good to go!

Triumph

Brilliant thread. So what's happened to all the redundant parts, assuming they would fit a 1996 Adventurer I'd be interested in the centre stand, indicators, possibly the master cylinders/levers and clocks for starters.

Hi fella,

They're all available I think, let me have your number and I'll pass it on to Paul!

That needs to be in a few shows. I'd swap the bars for a set lower and pulled back but otherwise I love it.

Will you put up a video with the engine running so that we can hear what it sounds like with the stubby S'trap?

I agree, I dare say it'll make a few appearances here and there. ideally I'd like to get it magazine featured but we'll have to see, it's not my bike after all!

I was hoping to have it running this week but the wondrous would of Triumph wiring diagrams have put pay to that. I can build the main loom very easily but the specific wiring from the Cdi unit (12 wires) is critical so I don't fry the Cdi when I power it up. Three different wiring diagrams, one from a Haynes manual, one from a Triumph forum and one very kindly supplied from the Triumph technician system at Laguna Motorcycles in Maidstone (many thanks Stuart) are all different!
So using a cross reference between the three I'm pretty much certain I have it nailed. Paul has been very involved in this particular stage of the process.
Hopefully she'll be ready to fire up towards the end of next week, I will of course provide a video of this moments event!

Wow, what a stunning looking bike. Fantastic workmanship and detailing but IMHO those bars are a monstrosity and really jar with the rest of the swoopy organic lines of the bike.

The customer wants them.

The customer is king.

Even if we do think that the customer is wrong:D

I'm the first to admit that they wouldn't be my choice but I don't hate them. When the bike is on it's side stand and you throw your leg over it, as you reach up to those bars they do feel pretty cool, completely horizontal arms straight out in front of you. It does feel very natural, and if I'm honest it does put a wry smile on your face!

It is worth remembering that this bike is all about choice, not many people go through the process of styling a bike from scratch. It comes with literally hundreds of choices to make, from paint colour and finish to subtle fabricated or engineered modifications and component choices. Without the benefit of this thread many people will see this bike out and about and not realise just how much work went into it. There'll be plenty of "Yeah he's chopped the back end off and removed the front mudguard" type of comments (I've seen similar comments within these pages)
On one hand it's a shame that all that work and all those subtle modifications don't get noticed but on the other hand it's a great compliment that the bike (bars not withstanding) looks kind of factory. All the modifications disappear into the overall look.

Paul's wife came over to see at the bike during the week for the first time. She loves the bike but hates the bars! Paul and I just chuckled about it as it's a pretty typical reaction. It doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks, Paul thinks it looks 'smart' and at the end of the day that's all that really matters!

What is important is that the bike prompts people into a reaction, good or bad doesn't matter. If the bike blended into the sea of GS's, Fireblades and Bandits and didn't get noticed, now that would be worse than any negative comment!

Absolutely, it's the impact of the subtle changes that are so surprising. The chopped rear is so obvious that it draws your eye immediately. Likewise the bars. It's only when you look longer and with more care that the rest is noticed.

You need to find a donor clone to park the project beside for a before and after shot, that would highlight just how changed the bike is.

Jeez this is just more and more impressive.

It's no wonder the people whose HID lights you install are always impressed - it's like getting Michelangelo in to paint the kitchen ceiling...:D
