A relative has been tasked with getting rid of his friends bike which is a 1996 Triumph Adventurer 900 triple, apparently it is SORNed and doesn't start as it has problem with the starter motor. The starter was replaced about 4 years ago with a recon unit so it could be that again. Other than that it's supposed to be ok.
I have been of erred the bike for around £600 and wondered if it's worth the money?

I may pop along and have a look over the next week as the chap is being evicted from his caretaker flat as he has been invalided out of the job and needs to shift it.
Anyone?

Starter Sprag Clutches, can be an issue

Proceed with caution, take a known good battery to try it, inspect the starter motor carefully

If it's the Sprag Clutch, can be expensive

Thanks for that, not sure I really even want it but someone on here may do. I'll take some pics etc.

If it's a starter sprag then you will know as it will clack and bang like a bastard as it cranks over. You should never start the old carbed T300 Series bikes with a weak battery as it's this that causes the sprag to go :blast

I could well be up for that at £600 even with a pooped starter sprag .......... Some photo's would be great :thumb

For someone that knows their way around those bikes that has to be worth £600.

The "custom" 900's always fetch top money around £2500 so worth a punt if you do your own spannering.

Cheers for the feedback chaps, there is some family issue over who actually owns it at the moment which needs resolving before he can sell it. Seems strange really as he must legally own it as he has SORNed it? Apparently he gave it to his brother who then passed it back and the logbook has gone missing and the poor chap can't remember the actual situation as in the meantime he has suffered a brain aneurism which has left him devoid of large parts of his memory hence the need to sell it before he is evicted from his caretakers flat by the council. Families huh!

Well my wife insisted that I buy this bike to help the relative out, tbh I didn't want it and I know some people contacted me to offer to buy it. However she felt I should take it on and get it back on the road again.
So after collecting the bike and looking deeper into its problems, mainly from standing for close on 2 years, I replaced the starter motor, solenoid, new battery, both brakes seized so they were overhauled and new pistons, seal, and pads fitted.
Chain needed a good clean and adjusting, petrol tank needed draining and new filter and repair to the tap, also new airbox and filter, spark plugs, oil change and filter, you have to remove the carbs to replace the airbox! Anyway all cleaned up and ready for the MOT now, yes it could have more time spent on it but I'll see what the MOT brings first.
Having ridden it around for a couple of miles I've realised how much bikes have come on and especially the BMW suspension and brakes. Seems to run ok but until it's taxed I won't know of course. So I may just decide to sell it on as I don't have time to ride two bikes.

So a couple of pics to show you.

Given that I've spent that much on the bike since buying it you need to try harder. :augie It's actually a nice bike that with a little effort could be very special. I really like the triples but as I have the GSA I can't see me really making use of it, shame to keep it sitting in the garage.

Passed the MOT with flying colours, not even an advisory. Although the inspector spotted the headlamp out of adjustment and very kindly adjusted it for me. It rides very well and just a dodgy rev counter to source and I'll be thinking about what to do with it.
