Triumph Thruxton 1200R

Lovely, but it will need a small tank bag for you to rest on whilst you take the weight off of your wrists!

Probably the epitome of my dream bike. Absolutely gorgeous.

I am fortunate enough to own a lot of bikes.

I will never sell this.

The best engine I’ve ever owned.

Massively underrated and kind of forgotten gems.

There’s a reason the “new” Triumph twin looks almost exactly like these.

Highly recommended

PS. Definitely go for the R or RS versions.

Far more desirable and a better ride too.

Oh and I’d recommend V and H pipes.

I was loaned one as a courtesy bike when I had a Tiger (a few years ago now) and I absolutley loved the thing; the sound of its exhaust, the torquey engine, the handling and the sheer beauty of it. Triumph build beautifully screwed together and well balanced machines, it has to be said. It is an excellent bike.

Not for me, though; it's a totally impractical machine for my needs; I don't do day rides and I doubt you could tour on it comfortably. Suffering as I do from neck, and by extension shoulder and back issues, it would end up being a plinth bike. I have a RE 650 Interceptor for riding into town and it's barely done 1600kms in three years. Obviously, the RE is a piece of junk in comparison and so doesn't have the same draw to go out on it, but I doubt I'd have put very many more miles on a Thruxton by now. I just don't get the time.

I guess it comes down to what your needs are and what you will use it for. I would never have it as an "only bike", personally, but if my needs were more aligned with its virtues, It would be top of my list, for sure. Such a beautiful bike.

Never liked the version with the fairing and dropped bars.
Why do so many owners junk the rear mudguard.
Looks unfinished.

I would own a silver roadster version if complete and mint.

5 owners, 7k miles in 9 years, part service history, says it all really, looks good, though not so sure about the fairing.

I had a 1200 Thruxton, the engine was one of the best I've had in any bike and proof that 100 bhp is more than enough for a rapid road bike. Mine was an early non R version and the suspension and brakes were pretty basic. I'd like to buy a Speed Twin sometime, the version with the stylema calipers, I think they use J Juan now. The suspension on later speed twins is better too

Nice bike for say a short Rumble around the A or B roads, but an adventure style bike is the way to go for touring 1 or 2 up, might be an age thing or possibly a wiser decision which so many others have advanced towards.

Pop the question why is it for sale, if secondhand, what did the previous owner purchase after it?

I don’t know where touring came from but it ain’t for that really.

If you want a cheap ish, well built, Beautiful looking bike to go for day blasts out, this is bullseye.

Trust me, in the price range there is nothing better.

I should have added IMHO

Both great bikes.

But for a classic look ……

Am only toying with the idea. I already have a great touring bike, see attached. Not sure why people tend to lump all riders into one group and what is comfortable and what is not. We are all different and what works for one person may or may not work for someone else. Would suggest that the ultimate relaxing ride is in a couch with someone else driving....very relaxing but not for me! I'm an old guy and have always preferred sport bikes for long trips and yes I have tried the big adventure bikes but again not for me. What ever your riding enjoy it. Once again thanks for your comments. Off to Ducati week on the Sport Classic end of June first part of July with two chums.

That may be, but let's be honest here, you are in a minority in finding a cafe racer a "good touring bike". Which is fine, by the way, it's just that it is not beyond the bounds of reasonability to assume that, generally, most people do not. Potentially you could use any bike for any purpose, Nick Sanders has proved that, but bikes are (usually) built with a purpose in mind. I don't beleive anyone has "lumped" anyone into anything. You asked for opinions and you got some, so perhaps next time, either explain what might offend your sensibilities, or accept them with better grace.
