Triumph Thruxton R not safe in the damp?!

Just phoned my local triumph dealer re. test drive the thruxton which I saw there last week. He actually said " can you phone back on a dry day, we don't like it going out on damp roads!"

At present there is cloud with patches of blue. The forecast is for light showers. I nearly fell off my Ducati laughing!

Luckily B.M.W. have no such concerns and I will be testing a R9T later today. I think my mind is already more than half made up. :augie
 
I'm sure. At least I hope i'm sure and that its not because the thing doesn't go around damp bends! After dealing with BMW and Ducati dealers for many years it just seems an unfortunate start to dealing with Triumph. Very prissy. About as bad as the Norton dealer i experienced. Glad I didn't buy one of those either!

So because a salesman has either had bad experiences of twats sliding off due to damp roads or doesn't want to perpetually clean the bike, you take that as though you were speaking to the head of Triumph and that the Thruxton is not safe in the wet? Righto then.
 
Steady with whatever that is you're smoking melch. It seems to be affecting your sense of humour. And not in a good way! :comfort

At the end of last year when I was test riding various models to decide upon my next purchase - I had booked a go on a Suzuki GSX 1000 S and a Triumph Speed Triple back to back in concert with a mate, so we could swap over half way through the day.

The dealer phoned me up as I was leaving on the first occasion and called it off as it was raining! I re-scheduled and on the next occasion he was reticent as it was forecast to rain during the day. I insisted we went ahead - It did rain but not that heavily; we still had our full go though. :)

As has been said, I also understand it from their point of view - but I couldn't continue to re arrange on the hope that it might ever be dry in October.

But from their perspective - possible the majority of modern riders rarely venture out if it is raining and the risks are high. They wouldn't know that I have ridden since I was 16 most days, come rain or shine :nenau

Plus in the instance quoted I suspect the new Thruxton will be in high demand, it is a gorgeous looking 'retro' after all, so the cleaner he can keep his demonstrator the bigger his margin when he comes to sell it when the queues for new bikes builds up. It is their business after all ....... He just has to balance this against hacking off potential new customers, that's all ...

All true ...... plus if a punter totals his Demo where does he get a replacement from on a bike with a long lead time?

I've known Demos being smashed up on dry days too. The weather is no guarantee that a third party will not do something really stupid :blast

BMW have always been good with test rides.
One of my mates took an R100RS out of BMW Park Lane & rode it to Birmingham & back.
They did n't mind.

The Thruxton R should be one of the safest bikes out there in the rain.....:rob

Traction control, Rain mode and Slip assist clutch.....

Hardly Doohan's NSR is it ???.....:P
 
All that you all say is valid. The irony is that the roads have been mostly bone dry all day. I guess it is up to them when they let their bikes out, but it's the first time I've come across it, and it does give me the impression that the bike is somehow delicate and the salesman a,well, not very good salesman. I did however take the r9t out and liked it better than I thought I would. I am liking the back to basics thing, and it ticks a lot of boxes for what I want a bike for nowadays. I might give triumph one more chance if weather and omens permit, before I take the plunge.
Anyone want to buy a ( serviced today) Ducati pikes peake with 7.5 k on the clock?!
