Just been looking around my (28 Month old)12 and I noticed that it's just starting to develope a dark slightly moist line where the gear box and engine marry. No drips yet but I think they may follow:spitfire . I can't see an inspection hole, maybe if I take the starter motor out I can see whats leaking. Any ideas ?

It mayonly be clutch dust but could be rear main seal or balance shaft seal if its engine oil. If its gear oil it may be input shaft seal. I would wash it off and take it for a good ride then check for leaks. I would get it dealt with asap if its leaking or you will need a new clutch plate too :( Pop into local dealer and ask them to submit a goodwill claim if its leaking you may get a good outcome :thumb2

Any pics of this Chris?

Mine has just been in (for the second time in 4 weeks) for new engine/gearbox ouput oil seals after I noticed this

Just been in to see CW Dorchester, showed them the leak. I'm told it will cost about £800 to repair  :spitfire , as it takes 15 hours of work. The hopeful news is they have applied for a "goodwill" thing and will let me know:mmmm. I don't know what I'll do if there is not 100% goodwill as I can't afford to pay:tears. CW seem good guys...but I suppose it's down to :bow BMW.

Don't take no for an answer.

Given the number of times this matter had been discussed on this forum I would suggest that it is a design problem.

Hows that work then,I had mine done under warranty for oil leak & front cover . they took it in the work shop @ 10am & i picked it up @ 2.30pm :D
that was both seals in the gear box & replace the front engine cover
So that sounds odd 15 hrs

It sounds like your leaks were on the front of the engine, which is a small job. My leaks (my bike's) are from the back of the motor between the gearbox and engine. To deal with either crankshaft and or balance shaft oil seals my bike has to be "split" in half to gain access. What I mean by Split is that the hole rear section of the bike from the front of the rider's seat is removed to get at the clutch etc. This is major surgery, I have seen some pics on this site showing the carnage. :eek

No same as you, gearbox had to be seperated from the engine & clutch removed to replace seals + the replaced front cover :aidan

Had the Same leak between engine and gearbox, fixed by NoG earlier this year. Clutch plate was changed at the same time. Bike dropped off at 0830 and picked up at 1530. Can't see how CW are quoting 15 hours. I reckon at most it is a 6 hour job.

My bike was 4 months out of warranty when I showed my dealer the problem. When it was fixed (it took them two goes) they said that a goodwill payment towards the cost (£260) had been declined because I had done too many miles (28k). :(

It’s annoying because I'm sure the oil weep had been there a while and probably started before the warranty period expired.

On the bright side they did try and sell me a new 12, with of cause, a two-year warranty and piece of mind etc. They valued my bike in part ex at about £5500.

Not surprisingly I declined their nice offer… :mmmm

Mine goes in on the 22nd for the same thing, they say they will change the clutch IF it has been contaminated with oil, would it be worth changing the cluth anyway even if its not contaminated?:nenau any one know how much a clutch is?:nenau

28k too many miles for a bike thats sold as go anywear globetrotter these bikes should be good for years and years of trouble free riding...:nenau

My bikes an 06 with 12500 miles ...Already had a number of warranty issues ...when i brought the bike i intended to keep it for 3 to 4 years but the 1200 has way too many major mechanical faults to to take a chance on out of warranty...

Reading the number of threads these oil seals leaking i'd have to agree with
Kaycee somethings not right :(

My mates bike goes in this week with above problems his bike is an 05 with 14000 miles ...

Just looking at the amount of warranty repairs carried out in the first two years on an average 1200 , How many are going to occur again out of warranty EG; Engine cover corrosion, Warped discs , Rear light corrosion ,And oil seals at £800 a go most of these parts are only replaced like for like:eek:

The sad thing is its fantastic fun bike but corrosion and oil leaks on a £10,500 Bmw :spitfire

Does any one know the the BMW official time required to change a crankshaft oil seal?... If I have to pay for mine to be done I want to be sure I'm not over charged.:augie

Steve, Who is NoG ?

Looks like good news for me:D. CW have agreed to repair my oil leak free of charge as a "goodwill" :thumb2. I've now been told that the job takes 6 hours to complete which should be approx. £65 X 6 = £390 so not sure where I got the £800 price :o ?. Maybe it included a 12000mile service:nenau
Still thanks to CW:)
