I know they break and there is a recall but do they keep the crud off the shock ? I just fitted Ohlins to my 1200GS and the rear shock is now very exposed but i don't really want to fit a hugger. Are there any other options ? - all I really want is one of those rubber flaps !

What about the small one that NN is selling? Looks pretty neat and would serve the purpose of keeping the shock cleaner.

Or is that one the one you mean?

Thanks Tartan but I don't like the bracket on that one. The TT version is the shortest I've seen but not convinced it would do the job.

Can't see that wee one anymore on NN's site?? It was very short and matched the front mudguard if you know what I mean.

The one with the alloy bracket is pretty ugly, I have just ordered a CF hugger from Windylick, sorry wonderlich as it looks very nice and well made. Not cheap but after losing out on 2 2nd hand ones on fleebay which went for £140 I decided to buy a new one. Should keep the crud off the GS's legs.

I think NN may have stocked the TT version until the recall so we are thinking of the same product. It's no longer available until TT redesign the bracket. Wunderlich is another option but too expensive and I'm not too keen on CF !

Phil thanks just what I need.

The Ohlins have made a significant improvement. I also had them on my 1150GS and would never go back to using original shocks on a GS.

I found that the orginal suspension on the 1200 felt a bit bouncy and the bike wallowed at speed. I also found the front was 'flappy' under power - all now significantly improved with the Ohlins.

Personally I feel this this is the best upgrade you can make on a GS if you like to go fast around corners. The standard springs are too soft IMO. However it has jacked up the rear which could be an issue if you have short legs (like me !).

Mike,
One suspension bloke here in Melbourne is getting work from 1200 owners having the shim stacks altered in the front shock to reduce the compression damping, which seems like a possible cheaper alternative to aftermarket items

Do you reckon fitting the Ohlins to the 1200 made as noticable a change as fitting them to the 1150 ? (I have an Ohlins-ed 1150, have recently ordered a 1200)

Cheers,

Phil

I would try your 1200 with the original shocks and then decide. Personally I think the Showa units are too soft. The bike handles better with stiffer springs and the ride quality has improved.
I actually think it has made a bigger difference on the 12 because the front had a tendency to flap under power. This never happened with the 1150 but is much better now I have the Ohlins on the 12.
