I'm about to head overseas for a few months and so will be putting my '04 R1200GS to bed, any top tips? Having read some threads it looks like sticking an Optimate on it wouldn't be too bad an idea. Any other good tips would be appreciated.
Hope you have all had a gd Xmas and have a gd NY.

Optimate = top bit of kit.

Other than that, just do as it says in the owner's handbook. It'll be fine.

I had a Pan European that sat for a year in a garage, just on an Optimate and did everything Honda suggested in the book. Just shut the door and left it. Worked just as well 365 days later.

Yep... RTFM :augie :thumb2

(which recommends removing the battery btw)

TFM also suggests that you visit your dealer for servicing,oils-tyres-brake pads and consumables and any specialist cleaning products you may require:rolleyes:
How many actually do? And how many would bother to remove the battery for a short lay up period?
As has been said many times, park it and leave it-it will be fine, fit an optimate for further peace of mind;)

Nah - it says you may wish to combine the lay-up with a service.

Preferably (well they would say that wouldn't they ?) at your MBW dealer.

Left for several months

I have done a similar time away several times recently and just hooked up the bike to an optimate (direct to battery of course) and it was absolutely fine when I got back. I was changing the tyres anyway when I got back so I didn't worry about them.

Laid up alarm

I do not know if you have an alarm on your machine or not,but if you have and are relying on it to attract someones attention should the bike be tampered with,(I know that it wont stop someone stealing it,but when i am away i tell the neighbours to atleast look/switch a light on if they hear it,as far as I am aware it has never false triggered)then you should be aware that it will switch itself off at some point after 7 days.So if you have asked someone to keep an ear cocked for the alarm you will need to make other arrangements.OK?Have a nice trip away.

Thanks for all of the above, it does have a META alarm which will 'sleep' but it should be secure...(that's probably put a jinx on it!)
With regards to the charger, if I do plump for a charger (Optimate) what's the best way to hook it up:1) seat off and crocodile clips straight onto the battery, 2) or battery out and off, or 3) just through the w/proof adapter?
Any thoughts?

3) just through the w/proof adapter?

Just the adaptor will be fine connected to the battery.I got some waterproof aftermarket connectors and changed them on my optimate but I have three machines I rotate the charger on so it was the cheaper option than buying three waterproof Optimate leads.
With an alarm on the bike you will most definatley need to keep the charge topped up.

Pop it round to my house and I will keep it ticking over for you:D:D:D
(may have a few more miles on it when you get it back and need a wash!!!!)

I don't...

have a bike at the moment and my garage is empty, would be quite happy to keep an eye on it for you...:D

Cheers Mick, that's a kind offer but I have got somewhere fairly close by.
Nice Fot by the way!

I've worked overseas for a few years and left bikes back in the UK, normally returning every 2-3months. I normally just left the optimate on connected via a permanently installed lead. Did nothing else and nothing fell off or blew up when I got home. Up to you how far you want to go. I'd probably give the BMW a good coating of ACF50/F365 as well given its "corrosion resistance".

One thing I notice when I start my GS up after a few weeks inactivity is a pronounced knocking. I clears after a minute or so when the oil pressure builds up.

I know how to cure it - just don't leave it inactive for too long. I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this?

It's not burning any oil & I've only heard the 'knocking' twice during my year of ownership so I'm not too worried, just curious.
