throw the FI out and fit bings.
they were good enough for my father and his father and .... blah, blah, blah

i digress, i've seen pics of oilheads with carbs and was wondering if any one on this board has tried it.
 
Just sorting the conversion now,speaking to a couple of ignition system manufacturers,not too sure about using Bings,though.....
I reckon a sorted carb set-up certainly can't be any worse than a compromised injection set-up,plus the ease of re-jetting around further engine mods....it's gotta be looked at.
 
Cookie,do you mean ask him because he had problems with the Bings,or ask him because he had the conversion sorted?
From your wording,I suspect the former,hence my 'not too sure about Bings' comment.

Bit late Cookie, but I just picked up on this. The BMW approach isn't as simple as 'ditch the plug' despite what the dealers might tell you ;-) What they say is that for bikes with no cat (lambda still connected) and the factory can, no plug is required (to make it easier for people wanting to use sh*tty fuel) - and for bikes with no cat (lambda still connected) and an aftermarket can, they supply a specific code plug - the beige/gold one. This elusive beige/brown plug connects the same pins as steptoes jumper.

I've got the beige/gold plug in mine and the fuelling seems spot...

Not sure if this helps or just confuses even more!

i meant the latter. i had a quick word with him about the conversion. he just wanted to ditch the electronics fore reliability reasons.

AFAIK they work fine.

tfi piggybacks onto the injector trigger wires & elongates the pulses. O2 sensor has to be disconnected for this to work, this had side effects on my bike [ECU could not control low speed fuelling causing richness].

R259 plugs into the BMW harness, O2 sensor remains connected & i guess the unit feeds erroneous data to the ECU to fool it into thinking it's fuelling as BMW intended. not sure, never had one.

what pins does the beige/gold plug connect? i'm confused as you mix it up with the beige/brown in your post.

what's the part number of the beige/gold?
 
oh yes sorry - i meant beige/gold. I'll pop down later and get the part number (or ring up motorworks or a BM dealer - they'll tell you). Here's Steptoes picture of his jumper which connects the exact same pins.

correct me if i'm wrong here, but doesn't steptoe's recommendation apply to 1150s?

Yup. I asked him yesterday if thats what I do to my 1100 and he said no as they were different.

i have a Lazer exhaust to fit on my 1100 now, but am reluctant to do so as i dont want it runing lean. Perhaps us elite 1100 owners should take it to this thread and try and resolve the problem :)
 
The injection system and aftermarket chip situation is interesting.
The R1100RT/RS is claimed to produce 90bhp against the R1100GS's 80bhp,(all BMW's figures).
The R1100RT/RS has slightly higher compression ratio and uses a different cam profile,but everything else,ie downpipes,injectors,cylinder head,are the same.
Interestingly,the RS uses the same Motronic unit as the GS.
Obviously some extra power is gained by the increase in compression ratio promoting a better burn,(10.3 against 10.7:1),but,as there have been no modifications to porting,valve sizes,exhaust,etc,in this case,more power equals slightly more fuel.
As most chips are purchased to stop lean running,this information would suggest the standard Motronic contains a map to enrichen the mixture adequately to cope with even the most free-flowing silencer.
A friend of a friend is really knowledgeable about injection systems having worked for Sagem and the Foggy Petronas team and I've asked him to look at the BMW system and explain exactly how everything works and within what parameters the sensors operate,for example,could the air temperature sensor in the airbox be altered to 'trick' the system into running say, 5% richer.
There is a lot of useful info on the Forum but,as yet,no 100% information.
The local BMW dealers are great at saying 'That's broken,here's a new one',but no use in explaining technically exactly what everything does,I guess there's no need for them to know.
Should be interesting and useful knowing the full SP of the system.
Apparently all the hardware is standard car parts,that's why it is all so large!

so what CCP does an RT/RS have?

how much difference does anyone think the TPS setting has on mixture?
 
The RS/RT's use the same CCP's as the GS's,different variants for different countries.
One of the questions I've asked concerns the TPS.
Use the BMW Owners Club model specification page and plot the power and torque curves for the GS,S and RT on the same sheet.
The midrange on the RS/RT and S is less than the GS,but the top-end power doesn't fall away so quickly.
I've never ridden either of the other 2 so don't know how this difference feels on the road.
Has anyone compared the others against the GS?
Obviously,if the midrange loss isn't too noticeable,would it be worth converting the GS engine to RS/RT spec?
 
Tried the Steptoe method and yes it did make a noticable differnce to the bike. Now much smoother,no backfiring and generally feels more responsive. I was surprised how such a simple motification could make such a difference
