TUNING.. wideband power Commander vs hill top dyno remap vs johns chip

whats the difference from the above

All adjust the fueling but all in different ways.

PC: External Box that plugs into your wiring loom and allows you to adjust the fueling - you can download and install a generic map for your bike or you can have your bike setup on a rolling road with a custom map.

+ Can be removed and sold on
- Can fail - the wiring is poor quality and not up to all year riding (mine failed which stopped the bike from starting and took a while to troubleshoot)
- A little messy - lots of exposed wiring

John's Chip:

Pre-programmed chip that runs a set of generic maps depending on the configuration of your bike (standard exhaust / race exhaust etc) that is installed inside your ECU.

+ Cost effective
+ Neat solution
- Map ins't specific for your bike - fueling will be better but not 100%

Hilltop

ECU remap that is setup on a rolling road - map is specific to your bike

+ Neat solution
+ Perfect fueling - setup for your bike and mods
- Cannot be removed and sold on as per the PC or the Chip.

I've tried all 3 along with a TFI box (can only add fuel). Hilltop is best IMO although there is a huge amount of debate about the quoted performance figures.

Hope that helps and good luck:thumb

There certainly is but if you ignore the largely irrelevant figures and just make a judgement on whether people are happy with the results it becomes far more clear cut. Very few people opt to take up Geoff on the "return to original and get your money back" guarantee. I only know of one or two.

thank you for you reply. i have johns chip fitted stage 8 the bike is a lot more power full. the problem im having is it must be over fuelling it back fires all the time. a full tank mileage has gone down 20 to 30 miles plus his chip dosent adjust closed loop ruining. so whem im doing a lot or touring the bike will be running lean even more due to the mods iv fitted.

i was thing of getting a pc wideband witch you can set to the correct fueling and leave. even in closed loop.

Moonhead, I'm so glad I was 'forced' down the Hilltop route as you can't get power commanders for the 1150 anymore.

The cost of a "Hilltop" is the same as a PC but if you want someone to set up you PC properly on a rolling road your looking at and additional £350 so it just doesn't make sense. The pc terminals can corrode and 12/24 months down the line wire's will come loose if not soldered in. I also believe the when you come to sell the bike buyers will be pleased you've been 'Hilltopped" so you may see so of your money back. That said I'm not hoping for longterm repayment, I'm just enjoying the 'fun' return on investment I'm getting right now.

ps Geoff's off now until early January.

i can get a pc for £200 so thats not the issue. witch one did you have. and tbh ill probs just end up going to hilltop

I went with a 'Hilltop" and I'm very pleased I did :beerjug:

I was booked it at 1pm and left about 3 hrs later.

All work is done via the ecu so I don't see how the timing could changed, but i could be wrong.

The new map was a generic 1150 map, then the bike is re run on the dyno and the map is then tweaked to suit the individual bike and modifications. (Mine's got a Y piece and open Remus end can.)

Geoff's software monitors the readings from the bikes various sensors including the oxygen sensors in the exhaust and makes adjustments to optimise performance. It is self learning. I don't know or much care how he connects to the ECU. I had my bike done and am very happy but it isn't an 1150 or even a BMW.

think i best start saving, dose he do discount for ukgser members

A small discount for a group buy but that's about all. It does make a big difference to how the bike rides/feels and will certainly sort your fueling out.

Good luck:thumb

The simple answer is buy a newer bike with more power.

I have a PC wideband fitted and it works well, certainly makes the bike a bit more tractable, but it still gets whooped in a straight line by a 600 hornet and barely hangs on to the coat tails of my mates lads VFR400R (NC30) once over 30mph.

1150's a just slow and that's how they are meant to be, don't waste ya time imho.

not looking for speed just want a smother ride

My 1150gs is faster than a hornet 600 with John's stage 6. remus.filter.and perfectly set up. Runs great

Oh no it's not!

You might think it is, but after 100 the hornet pisses off. Up to a ton it is pretty close, but the 1150 is nowhere near the capabilities of a half average modern jap bike (or even one of similar vintage).

As for a smoother ride, the PC has made it a bit smoother, but again, a jap four is smooth like a hairdrier, the vibration is character, why would you want to lose that?
