Tunnel under the High Atlas

Currently, improved road link between the two tourist areas in Marrakech and Ouarzazate, has become a priority for local authorities. Technical studies and financial arrangements will be finalized during the summer (of 2011). The objective is to achieve a fast track with digging tunnels under the High Atlas mountains. The expressway will boost tourism and economic sectors not only in Ouarzazate, Errachidia and but also to the province of Tata.

On the positive side it would be cool if the original road over the Tichka remains open and in relatively good repair as the reduced traffic would be an advantage.

This isn't the first time a tunnel under the Atlas has been attempted, there was an abortive effort made from the Zate Valley.
