hi hope you can help, i am about to check my valves and end float gaps and i have got to the covers off plugs out. and straw in on the piston ready to indicate TDC.
my problem is i cant move the rear wheel to turn the engine (I'm not a weakling or maybe i am) its in 1st gear and i have only manage to move it an inch and that moved sudden.
any advice as I'm sat with my beloved it bits and the sun is shinning, such a sorry sight :comfort

many thanks

thank you steptoe that worked back to the garage - your all so helpful

many thanks

hi steptoe not sure if your still about.

i have done my end floats all seem good - i am now on the valves same side and TDC but cant get any size feeler gauge (even the smallest) in the gap - as you look at the cylinder inlet valves on left exhaust on the right.
is it normal for the gaps to close over time or should they become slacker?

Many thanks again

just checking...........
Have you got the engine at TDC on the compression stroke ?

You do one side of the engine at TDC on compression stroke then turn the engine over so the other side is on TDC on the compression stroke, both sides aren't on compression at the same time.

no sorry for the confusion i am on the left side only and not touch the other side

you've had the left side at TDC on the compression stroke???
so you need to move the rear wheel so that the piston on the right side is at TDC on the compression stroke :augie

Rotate the rear wheel in the normal rotational direction and watch the inlet valve

When it closes feel for tdc with your straw or use the Timing window on the left engine casing

Once it hits TDC you can set those valves

once you've done one side watch the other sides inlet valve for closing and carry out the same proceddure

what valve clearance settings are you using?

you will not get a feeler guage in unless you lift the rocker arm ( Slide it up a bit ) ....;)

I always turn the engine over with the nut on the end of the crankshaft (clockwise only!).
Good opportunity to check the condition of the alternator belt every service (and clean all the mud out).
