My Nov. 02 .1150 GS Has compulsory daytime riding lights.BMW simply fitted a blanking piece in where the light switch was.I'd like to convert it to switchable lights & wondered if anybody has attempted to do this. Before i start attacking the twistgrip area, are the old wires still in situe & is it just a simple case of fitting a switch & conecting up.Thanks for any advice.

Sorry for my indulgence but why would you want to switch off your lights at all, safety and all that stuff??

Unfortunatly my garage is'nt equiped with electricity,so i can't use an optimiser to eliminate battery drain due to the poxy alarm. So when i want to start the bike after a week or so' the last thing i want is the lights to come on prior to starting....Is it me....

My understanding is the AHO, ( automatic headlight on ) circuit switches the headlights off until the engine is running, is this right ????

I don't think its just a switch removal.

yes you are right Jim, but i have stalled it etc after starting & with the headlights on thats been enough to drain the battery. I still feel i'd like to have a choice in the matter....IS it me....

No it's definatley NOT just you. It is entirely reasonable to want to do this both for your prefectly acceptable given reason and the fact that such draconian measures are not required of any experienced sensible motorcyclist who is capable of making their own risk assessments and counter measures to ensure their safety.

For each occasion someone can tell my why this no light swtich is a good safety measure I could counter with one for the opposite viewpoint.

In any even the man doesn't want to know whether you or I think its a good idea or not he wants to know how to do it or what to expect - or am I now missing something too

Whomsover said don't post after drinking was right - especially champers!! :thumb

In Australia all BMW bikes have come wired with lights on for about 10 years.

When I bought my 98 1100GS I simply purchased the headlight on/off cluster switch that sits on the right hand twist grip assembly. As far as I know it's available as a spare part so I would suggest that you do that rather than fiddle forever trying to get the headlights to go off. It's as simple as unplugging the cable at the cluster under the tank and unscrewing the switch on the bar.

I never run with headlights on, except at night.

Mick.
