ok ok - I know RTFM applies but where it states <5,500 revs for the first 125 miles (etc) do they mean do not exceed 5,500 but reach them regularly or do they mean reach 5,500 as often as possible?

At the moment I'm going with the former.

It's actually quite a harsh schedule and when they say brief bursts of full power 600km - 900k, that will take some doing on British Autumn roads, I assume that relates to sealing the rings and future oil consumption will depend on it?

Maybe it's covered elsewhere, apologies if so.

Ride it 'normally' but without exceeding 5500rpm. Make sure you do load the engine from time to time, and don't do long stints at a constant RPM

Ok thanks, I guess that means hit 5500 revs occasionally but not too often, ditto for each 1,000 rev increment in the schedule.

It must be worked as the schedule asks for occasional full power between 400 and 600 miles, that's a big ask if she's been treated too gently 0 to 400 miles.

And don't treat it too gently after that. Mine is just loosening up after 3500 miles and I suspect it will continue to improve for a few thousand miles more.

Thrash the tits off it:thumb The only things not to do are not labour it and not do a long motorway run.

I was quite hard with mine when it was new and changed the oil at 300 miles to clear the initial debris.

It's never used a drop of oil and still pulls like a train at 88k:thumb

Wot he said.:thumb Take it up to the red line once or twice, but not too often. These engines will have been thrashed before they even leave the factory:rob

I see this quite often about the disagreements of how to run an engine in. We're all entitled to our own beliefs I guess but I'm interested to know why people think they know better than the manufacturer when it comes to these things. The manufacturer build these engines, spends a small fortune testing them and then determines what's best for them. Personally I will take their advice over any other.

There's a very good article on the web stating why you should thrash an engine from the word go, but I've also seen a very good article that states why this is all a load of nonsense. At the end of the day it's your bike, so obviously do what you want with it. I personally follow the manual. I don't treat it with kid gloves though, and will load the engine and accelerate hard within the limits of the manual :thumb2

Followed "Motomans" running in procedure to the T on my last 2 bikes the latest been 2012 dohc 1200gs.

In contrast to my previous 2005 1150gsa which was not run in by me and used around 1/2 ltr of oil every 1000mls, neither of my 1200's have used any significant amount of oil and have never been topped up between services.

My dohc 1200 has 8000mls on the clock and is running like a dream.
It's by far the nicest boxer engine I've ever owned and I've owned a few.

Agree with Bilco - but don't redline it !! They make a nicer bike in the long run.

Spot in Steve

One of my 1150 GSA 's was run in by me & one wasn't

Guess which one uses most oil ?

I suspect the one not run in by me, was 'babied'

My last new 2 GS's owned from new have been ridden normally from the off

I also bought an 'ex-demo' 12 GSA which I suspect had been thrashed mercilessly in the 4000 miles

It was fine & the subsequent owner still says it's fine

Ride it normally & rev it through the gears from time to time

I cant comment on BMW specifically but this type of advice applies to any engine. I had an Audi 1.9 TDI 130 from new. It was very tight for the first thousand miles but gradually loosened up and only reached its full potential at 10,000. It was always used strongly but never thrashed to the limit (no point in a TDI) and not slogged at low revs. Unfortunately I had no choice with motorways as the car was a business tool and that was where it lived most of the time.

After my divorce I downsized my life and have had a string of old cars and bikes. One was a 1999 Fiat Seicento with 40K on the clock in great condition that came from a friend. The car had only been used around the lanes of South Wales & had been given an easy life.

It was the base model so expected to be slow but this was painful and fuel consumption was poor. It was serviced and used for regular runs between Cardiff and Derby. After about a month it began to improve and after a few months it would sing along and gave much better mpg.

Basically, it had never been properly run in so the engine was tight as duck's wotsit.

An (extended) Italian tune up sorted it out.

There was a great series on Men and Motors (I think) where they visited all the major bike factories (one per week) and went over the companies history, all the Japs, plus BMW, Ducati and MV.

I think most (if not all ) ran dyno tests, and the BMW's did an extensive run on the dyno to check them, dunno if this is full power runs, but they certainly were ran up for a while.

I am sure some others were given full power tests, it was a couple of years back when I watched them so I don't fully remember.

when I ran mine in I ran it to the limit frequently at each mileage/rev point and I have only changed oil, never needed to top up...
I ran it in harder than I usually ride it

Just ride it like you've just stolen it
