Really would be useful to know Pre 2006 or post 2006 bike but I am thinking

2006 onwards GSa ?

If it is non servo (Whirring noise under tank when brake lever pulled ??)

Then you can basically ride away Its likely the Brushes stuck in the ABS motor slides #CommonFault

If it is pre 2006 servo / Integral ABS be very careful as it will likely be residual braking only

you should be able to roadside reset that with correct start up sequence (which I can't recall)

it's something like left indicator and abs twist key to position 2 wait 5 seconds and start..? which either resets the lights and all is fine or all is not fine... and you might wanna slow down alot

I'm sure someone will be along who knows how to do it

Looks like it's a Twin Cam....... 2010 onwards??

S20 5G sent this......

After stopping and turning off the ignition and then re-starting, does the speedo take a couple of miles to kick in?

I would say as mentioned brushes stuck on ABS motor. Half a days work to fix not a roadside repair, it happened to me twice.
typical BMW, bikes have had this fault since 2006 to 2012 NFA

Ok. when you get back take the bike out and if the speedo doesn't work at first but then chimes in at around two miles the rear abs sensor is either not giving a signal to the ECU or it is but
it's corrupted and the ECU doesn't recognise it. The signal can be corrupted by metal particles adhering to the magnetic sensor inside the final drive housing. Removing it and having a look will
tell you if that's the case. If it works fine, then you may have the stuck brushes in the ABS pump motor problem about which, there is shed loads of info. on here so, do a search.

speedo graphics and redline give the game away

its a complete myth that the ABS only went wrong on two versions... it goes wrong in cars and bikes from any manufacturer.
The idea is to sell vehicles not give a toss if you are happy.... if you didn't buy a new bike they make you buy one in spares at twice the price

Lease FTW if you want a BMW, or buy a "Japanese bike" not made in Spain or Thailand

Did I miss an image? I'd swear that's the rev counter in the pic?

ps. Anything with one moving part can go wrong... Indeed, something with no moving parts can go wrong!

Not sure what your point was? Was it that?

wow - I wondered if we were going to get that one....

the graphics style is the same style on both clocks... and the generic term for the "kombi" (aka instrument cluster) is the Speedo

Not sure what your point was?

just adding clarity its a normal designed to fail expensive issue and nothing untoward has happened. The light came, on you go to BMW give them £2000 they wash the bike and the lights gone out. Just like they made it

I guess you are trying to help the OP out but, at present, i'm struggling to see how.

I don't want them to worry that the light came on. Its so common this should be in the owners manual.

we stitched you up get your money out... or if you like diy look on youtube for a free fix

What? Since when did 'Speedo' encompass all the other dials and instruments on the instrument cluster? The 'Speedo' is just one of the 'instruments' in 'the cluster'.

You're pulling my chain
