Two minor failures in so many weeks

Had my left hot grip fail and duly replaced last week and this week i have noticed that 3 of the little prongs on the centre stand that hold the springs to the main stand have sheared (don't know how), one more and the stand would have just flapped down! Not good on the motorway!

So now booked in to have a new stand.

Bike is a July 2008 GSA with 14000 miles on the clock.

Fingers crossed this will be the last little hinderance to what has and still is a great workhorse.
 
Just minor faults mate :thumb:thumb:thumb just wait till your final drive fails, your gearbox goes bang & your indictors start to go haywire as my GS1200 DID :eek::eek::eek:
 
More Minor Problems !

The centre stand that was replaced has broken exactly the same AGAIN. The left winglet has cracks, the instrument panel is melting, the Auxillary light switch is broken and the number 2 on the 1200GS is peeling off. I have also had a new headlight replaced under warranty since writing the original thread. I really am starting to get a little bit fed up now, I honestly didn't expect this many "silly" problems with a supposedly top of the range bike !

I rang BMW customer services to discuss the problems that have occurred in the past 14 mths and to be honest I wasn't overly impressed with their attitude!

Seriously thinking about outing the thing for a a JAP bike again !

I had an epiphany today. I have had nothing but minor problems since I've had mine. Today it registered a tail light fault while the tail light was still working normally. Reckon that's it. It's going up for sale. Love to ride this bike, hate owning it.
 
The rear light connectors corrode, you can sort it yourself with some sandpaper and then cover the connectors with grease/paint/tape. Alternatively buy the nice LED rear unit.

Your winglets cracked because you got petrol on them.

You should stop whining else your 1200 might get pissed at you and shit the gearbox, or one of the many seals, or FPC, or RHS valve or ... ;)
 
Well I have never had any problems with all the GSA's that I have owned.

maybe it is the fact that I run them in properly

The rear light has a function that if one element fails, it re-routes the power through the other so you still have a light, clever eh!

It's a great bike. What's the problem?

Mine. '06 12 GSA.

Spotlight relay failed. Replaced under warranty. Kept riding it.
Left indicator switch failed. Replaced under warranty. Kept riding it.
Instrument console failed. Replaced under warranty. Kept riding it.
Ignition switch (not ring sensor) failed. Replaced under warranty. Kept riding it.
Spotlight relay failed (again). Replaced under warranty. Kept riding it.
Spotlight switch failed. Replaced under warranty. Kept riding it.
Chest plate corroded. Replaced under warranty. Kept riding it.
Fuel filler corroded. Replaced under warranty. Kept riding it.
Final drive failed catastrophically. Out of warranty (expensive ouch) Replaced with second-hand unit. Kept riding it.
Speedo and ABS stopped working. Sensor in final drive damaged due to failure. Replaced it. Kept riding it.
Headlight beam adjuster fell off. Fixed it (not pretty but works). Kept riding it.
Taillight stopped working due to poor design and corrosion. Replaced it. Kept riding it.
Tyres have worn out a number of times. Replaced them. Still riding it.
It uses lots of oil because I have to throw it away at each service. Refill it. Still riding it.

Get the picture? It's a machine. Sometimes they break. Fix it. Then ride it. Don't leave it in the garage and throw sugar at it.
 
Leave it in the garage, yeah right........23,000 miles in 15 mths. Poor workmanship IMO, 7 mths warranty left ...phew !

I am at a loss as to how proper running in would prevent the failure of ALL the issues i have experienced, none are mechanical (yet). So please tell me how my left heated hot grip or headlamp would be affected by NOT running in properly, which isn't applicable anyway as it was run in properly.

Interesting that if you talk to any BMW salesman off the record they openly admit the R1200GSA has had too many faults.

I don't think anybody would dispute the fact that their quality control has slipped considerably, but don't let that ruin your enjoyment of what is a stunningly capable and fun bike. I have been riding BMW motorcycles every day since 1985 so I started riding them back in the over-engineered, incredible build quality and Old Faithful-like reliability days. I have had lots of them of all types and yet I have never had one that gives me such a blast to ride. The grin factor is simply second to none. Okay, so they are flawed, but so is Angelina Jolie and I'd still like to ............................. :augie
